“Late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China”is a sensitive and complexperiod in Chinese history. Women’s journey to the West is one of the series of historicalevents in the specifically historical period. In this process, the women’s literary creationis of a text event and also a kind of construction process. More than two hundredwomen went to Europe and America in nearly50years, many of which produced someworks when living there. During going aboard,they completed self construction invirtue of the western image of "the others" and combined with their own life experienceto discover selves and confirm selves. Personally, going aboard is a choice in one’slife.When individuals coming together into groups, to study a sort of women’s life andmentality can not only expand our academic vision, also give an impulse to review themand their literary.This paper summaries women’s journey to the West and their course of creation forthe first time. The content of the preface contains the following aspects, such as thesubject that this thesis concerns, the present situation and the methods, the clue and thesignificance.The content also focuses on the reason of the selection to the subjects andmakes the necessary interpretation on the limited period and the composition of thewomen to the West via the concept of “late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China”,“jouney to Europe and America” and “the mirror to Europe and America”.Except the preface, this thesis is divided into four chapters. In the first chapter, thethesis is the women’s ideological track in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic ofChina, which analyzes the development of woman’s rights and the harvest of femaleeducation. Particularly, concerned with "support" policy that is related to women’sstudying abroad, this chapter will further analyze female’s driving force. From both horizontal and vertical dimensions, the meanses and the types of women’s journey tothe West will be classified in order to find out the specific reason of women’s goingabroad.In the second chapter, the thesis probes into the “popular” world of Europe andAmerica, which was shapped by women’s newspapers. On the basis of relatedinformation from “Women’s Periodical”,“Women’s Education Periodical”,“Women’sWorld”,“Women’s Sympathy”,“Chinese New Women World”,“Chinese Women’sPeriodical”,“Modern Women”,“Shenzhou Women’s Journal”,“Women’s Journal”, thischapter summarizes the West world in women’s mind in the terms of the times. Thethesis combines with social, political, cultural and ideological factors to analyze thecharacters of the mirror to Europe and America and probes into the collectiveimagination on the mirror to Europe and America at the beginning of twentieth Centurywhich was built by women’s newspapers between late Qing Dynasty and early Republicof China. As the case of women’s newspapers,“Shenzhou Women’s Journal”(1912-1913)and “Women’s Journal”(1916), the remaining part of this chapter will concretelyreproduce the efforts of women’s newspapers on "participation to create" and "individual acceptance" in order to explain the individual mirror to Europe and Americatentatively.In the third chapter, the thesis is on the Europe and America world of women’sextraterritorial and traditional creation. The thesis mainly does some research on certainimportant women’s extraterritorial and traditional creation, mainly involving the ShanShili, Lu Bicheng, Zhang Mojun, Wang Maoyi, Su Xuelin and other women and theirworks. Each writers have their own unique Europe and America world, while the sameis that they all produce in traditional styles and collectively write the mirror to Europeand America. Besides, these works are also the prominent part of women’sextraterritorial and traditional creation between late Qing Dynasty and early Republic ofChina, which not only exhibit a relatively integrated image, but also develop the newfunction of traditional creation on constructing horizon to see foreign country.In the last chapter, the thesis is on female abroad students’ attempt on literature.Themirror to Europe and America exhibits a complex and slow transition, which can’t be achieved only by a few writers or a kind of style. This chapter will analyze femaleabroad students’ extraterritorial creation in other style, which are involved in small freeverses, new style proses, vernacular fiction and so on. The people include a group ofwomen ever active in the1920s, whose works are combined with their practice inforeign country and focus on women’s right and education for women and children andother issues.The appendix is a table on the condition of women abroad and the contentalso comprises a summary of women’s literary works between late Qing Dynasty andearly Republic of China. In conclusion, the author of this thesis hopes all of them cangive reference to the academic field.
