Discourse Functions Of Textual Key Word

This dissertation studies the discourse functions of textual key word.Textual key word is a new kind of key word which function switches into humanities science from natural science.Textual key word is a kind of key word which is given in a text and takes part in constructing the whole text. It, as secret key word, index key word and searching key word, is a subtype of key word. Textual key word always exists in academic paper, news, and books and is an integral part of the whole discourse. It connects with other parts of the discourse as a whole.Key word, as the name implies, is a key role, mainly because it carries the major, core and most important information, is the key point to catch information, and it is an entrance to get more information, it can activate the potential of information. It is the central discussion of this dissertation on the linguistic essential reasons for these important functions of key word.The function of key word had changed greatly from1970s. It added the textual functions to the traditional functions,encrypt, index and search. It is used to writing,to compose a discourse whole. Key word switches to a discourse word from a lexical word. A new kind of key word had been born——textual key word. It not only has above-mentioned functions, but also an unique discourse function.First, textual key word is an integral part of the academic paper. And more, it is a kind of research method and technique. Key word combining narration about it produce a new writing style——key word writing style to discuss one certain domine. This writing style has been more and more used in writing books and news. It has became a new emerging and common writing phenomenon.In the academic paper and key word writing style discourse, textual key word is a integral part of the whole discourse. It relates to other parts of the whole in many ways, and shows unique discourse functions. It analyses the linguistic essential features and discourse functions from linguistic perspective. Based on cohesion theory of the Systematic Functional Linguistics and Intertextuality theory of Julia Kristeva. This research analyses the cohesion and coherence between key word which is a relatively independent part of a discourse and other parts which are in the same discourse with it, and investigates the function of key word to interpret and construct a discourse.This dissertation is divided into six chapters. First chapter is introduction. It introduces the object of this study, reviews the previous research on key word, and introduces the theories, methods and value of this study uses and the language materials.The second chapter is ontological study on key word. It reviews and summaries the development of the concept of key word and sorts it into four types according to its function:secret key word, index key word, searching key word, and textual key word. Next, comparing key word with subject headings, catchword and hot word, it defines the key word and describes the characteristics of key word from linguistic perspective.The third chapter is about key word writing style. It comes up with a new writing style——key word writing style. This style is a discourse construction form which develops from dictionary style. It is composed of key word and its narration, as same as head-word and criteria in a dictionary. Next, it reviews the development of key word,and summaries the advantages of this writing style:summarizing information, organizing information, enter certain domine, and forming a high open and objective textual space.Chapter four and chapter five are the case studies on textual key word and key word writing style.The fourth chapter is focus on textual key word in academic paper. It reviews and summaries the related studies on textual key word in academic paper, and concludes the inadequacy of obvious studies. Next, it analyses the generalization and construction functions of textual key word, and the lateral relevance among key words, vertical relevance between key word and abstract by using grammar theories, discourse linguistics, cognitive linguistics, and other theories. Basic on this study, it puts forward some principle of choosing key word in academic paper.The fifth chapter is focus on textual key word in news and key word news. Through analyzing huge amount of key word news, it summarizes the development of key word news from both diachronic and synchronic views. Next, it describes the style characteristics of this news style. Last, it comes up with the functions of key word in this news style:that is, salient information, summary information, organize information, reading oriented and discourse cohesion.The last chapter is conclusion. It explains the reason of selecting this topic, summarizes the main contents and conclusions and inadequacy of this study.
