| This dissertation is a case study of Zhou Mi. Researchers of Zhou Mi’s works are likely to feel that they are witness to Zhou Mi’s dazzling transformations. Provided that Zhou was so broadly accomplished across separate fields (a fact that is invariably mentioned regarding him), he speaks with an array of distinct voices. Even a short list would have to include classicist, dissident, essayist,, and, above all, historian, poet, song-lyricist, and connoisseur of the arts. What, then, is the balance among these many Zhou Mis and how are they connected? It has been the author’s goal to tie the diverse aspects of this remarkable person neatly and systematically together, though no dissertation could ever do justice to so tough a task.In the author’s opinion, the state of life is found as "meaningful whole" within the works written by Zhou Mi.In the earlier studies of Zhou Mi, his public images as a famous poet, historian, prose writer etc., have been highlighted while the other part of him as a "person", his passion and aspiration, his sufferings of the diaspora, and etc., ignored, concealed, or even neglected., In fact, as an integrated literary self, both the public and private parts of Zhou Mi are rich and unique. Thus, this dissertation is intended to broaden and deepen the comprehension of Zhou Mi’s inner part in order for the future researchers to fully appreciate Zhou Mi’s literary world and the state of life in his art.The first chapter of the dissertation will focus on Zhou Mi’s thoughts of being in his writingsChapter Two aims to discuss diaspora in Zhou Mi’s works while the following chapter is intended to reveal how Zhou Mi created his identity.Chapter Three intends to deal with Zhou Mi’s reflections on the history.Chapter Four will lay emphasis on Zhou Mi’s prominent and controversial emotional experience, which is Zhou Mi’s motivation to develop his particular style.Chapter Five points out that Zhou Mi’s text structure is the elaboration of his state of life. The author argues that connections can be discerned between the directions he took as artist and political and intellectual disputes he engaged in.The last chapter of the dissertation ventures to explain Zhou Mi’s state of life in the literary world and its influence on the intellectuals of the following generations as a paragon. |
