The increase in the birth rate has brought great opportunities for children furniture market in China.With consumption upgrading,young consumers show more confidence in their buying ability which features personality,diversity and quality.At present in the design and making of children furniture in China,more importance is attached to such dimensions as safety assurance,right size and rich styles but less on the development of children’s mental health,which is also a key guarantee to the quality of children furniture.Hence the ultimate purpose of the research is to study how to help Shanghai-based middle-and-upper-income families realize their goal of developing mental health of their children through children furniture design.The major findings to be yielded from this study are as follows:1.Putting forward the notion that children furniture design consists of two aspects: commonality and difference on the psychological level.17 design factors of children furniture design are extracted: stability,age appropriateness,cognizability,environment friendliness,emotion experiencing and regulating,parent-child interactivity,adaptability,mobility,space saving,easy-cleaning,fault tolerance,self-support,interesting,intelligence-promoting,aesthetics /artistry,kids only,high-quality.2.Proposing that the changing of common factors in children furniture design should be developed according to psychological development rules of children of different age and both genders,and hence design factors are classified into two categories: basic,and performance and delighters.3.Proposing that user family grouping is affected by such factors as parents’ breeding beliefs,family decision makers and the living level,and hence 4 user family personas are constructed among Shanghai-based middle-and-upper-income families,that is,trusteeship and self-achievement family,elite,hierarchical family,liberal-and-sociable-type family,and liberal-and-intellectual family.4.Building factor models of children furniture design aimed at the above four user groups.Quick access to the browsing results of the corresponding children furniture design strategies can be gained through entering children’s age,gender and family categories as key words,and four sets of children furniture concept design are made accordingly.5.Substantiating the common belief that parents have the final say in the buying process of children furniture.The quantitative research shows that parents have obvious parenting motive when buying children furniture and there is a certain correlation between a parenting style and the corresponding design factor.6.Constructing the systematic study method of persona.Employed in the research of persona are two methods: the quality research through field work and the quantitative research through questionnaire.Ethnography is introduced in field work for data collecting,and grounded theory is used in analyzing data.In this way the rigor and validity of persona research are hence improved.
