Research On Literature Of Pengcheng Liu’s Family In Southern Dynasties

The family is the backbone of medieval society, the literature of family is the mainstay of the Southern literature. Study on family literature, is of great significance to the study of the Southern literature. The Pengcheng Liu’s family is one of the four families with most writers in Southern Dynasties. They are important for the Southern literature. Liu Hui is famous in Yongming. Liu Xiaochuo is well-known in Liang. Liu Xiaoyi is famous for his article while Liu Xiaowei is famous for his poetry. Liu Lingxian sisters are important poetesses in that time. Liu Ru, Liu Zun and so on are also good writers. This thesis will discuss the literary creation of Pengcheng Liu’s family, highlighting its creative features and contribution to the literature of the southern dynasty. This thesis is divided into six chapters.Introduction is mainly to show a brief overview of the Liu’s family and their literature. And this part also summarized the present research on Pengcheng Liu’s family. This part clarifies the research ideas of this thesis, and provides the breakthrough direction.The first chapter is the general inroduction of Pengcheng Liu’s family. Pengcheng Liu’s history is short but brilliant. Liu’s family turned from military to literature and there were given special treatments by the royal family. The Liu’s family shew filial obedience, believed in Buddhism and were gifted in many ways. Articles of Liu’s family are mainly Pianwen and official documents with beautiful words and historical worth. Their poetry usually took tour, feeling expression, object chanting, feast and erotic theme as titles.The second chapter studies on Liu Hui, Liu Zhen and so on.. Liu Hui is a very important writer of Pengcheng Liu’s family. He is the opener of Pengcheng Liu’s literature. Liu Hui’s article is very moving. He responsed the famous Yongming poets like Shen Yue, Xie Tiao and Wang Rong. His poetry shew how Yuanjia poetry developed into Yongming poetry. He influenced the next generation of Pengcheng Liu’s literature. Liu Zhen’s poetry is like a painting. Liu Ru and his brothers are literary retinue of Xiao Gang and Xiao Yi.The third chapter studies on Liu Xiaochuo’s life and his articles. Liu Xiaochuo is the crown of Pengcheng Liu’s family literature. His life quite twists and turns, there are some famous literary cases, such as who is the actual editor of Shiyuanyingh.ua and Wenxuan. The entanglements between Liu Xiaochuo and Dao Qia is quite famous. Most of Liu Xiaochuo’s articles are official documents. But some of the other type of his article reflects the aesthetic pursuit of Zhaoming literature group, being especially valuable.The fourth chapter takes Liu Xiaochuo’s poems as the object of study. The main title of Liu Xiaochuo’s poetry is the tour, the expression of feelings, the feast, the object-chanting and the erotic affairs. He is good in scenery chanting. He felt missing for being unsuccessful. His feast-description reflects the how unique Southern Dynasties’feasts were. His object-chanting is very vivid. His erotic poetry is quite fair. Liu Xiaochuo’s poetry tends to be beautiful and refined, with smart allusions and harmonious rhythm. Liu Xiaochuo’s reputation declined in later ages, but he was still known for his poetry achievements.The fifth chapter mainly takes Liu Xiaoyi and Liu Xiaowei as the object of investigation. Liu Xiaoyi’s article is the best among the brothers. His poetry is very nice as well. Sometimes he imitated Wu Jun. Liu Xiaowei’s Zan is quite unique. He did better in poetry. With the usual title of tour, feast, object-chanting and erotic affairs, he show how he created Yuefu and how romantic his poetry is. Liu Xiaosheng, Liu Xiaoxian are good at five-word poems, Liu Xiaosheng uses lots of allusions to reason things out. Liu Xiaoxian describes the clear viewing, often with zen.The sixth chapter takes the Liu Lingxian sisters as the object of study. The appearance of female writers is one of the major characteristics of Liu’s family literature. Wang Shuying’s Wife, her poetry is lively and fresh. Liu Lingxian is more talented in literature than her elder sisters. Lingxian’s Jifu Wen is very important for funeral oration’s development. Lingxian’s poetry reaches many fields of ancient talented women’s life. Liu’s sister’s creation reflects the more "pure" ancient Chinese women’s literary creation characteristics, the criticism they received also reflects the situation of Chinese ancient women’s creation.The conclusion shows the relationship between the Pengcheng Liu’s family and southern literature. This part gives an overview of how the Pengcheng Liu’s family literature embody the character of this era and how the Liu’s family show the changes of the Southern literature. This part also points out that although Pengcheng Liu’s family were beyond of the major category of Southern literature, but they still had some personalities, such as there were some unique styles of creation, and female writing of Liu’s family had developed.
