The Research On Duan Yucai’s Concept Of Linguistics

Academia of Qing dynasty had come to its peak during Qianlong and Jiaqing period,and Duan Yucai is a representative man of this time.With his knowledgeability and preciseness,he wrote many books so that he made great contribution on exegesis,philology and phonology.Not only he set a good example for the people at that time,but also influent the subsequents.The article concentrate on the words of Shuowen Jiezi Zhu(说文解字注)、Jingyunlou Ji(经韵楼集)and try to research Duan’s view of linguistics.The issue will unfold in six chapters:In chapter one and chapter two,we pay attention to the meaning of a word.Based on the theory on core meaning of Chinese vocabulary,discuss on the contribution of Duan on the conclusion of the meaning of a word.By the analysis on monosyllable and cognate words,we find that Duan had two different generalization for two kinds of words above.The method that Duan used can help him distinguish synonym and make clear the meaning of a word.In chapter three and chapter four,we pay attention to morphology and grammar.From the angle of linguistics,we reinspect Duan’s cognition on above two aspects,illustrate his attention on word class,parts of speech and synonym.Meanwhile,we point out that Duan could distinguish grammar and syntax,language and speech,simultaneously,he could solve problems by using structure and style of the text.In chapter five and chapter six,we study on methodology.The former related to his dialectical thought.Numerous examples indicate a special kind of words which include two opposite meanings.Then we go one step further to research philosophy thought in the analysis on the meaning of the word.The latter deal with Duan’s logical analysis used in his research,shows his induction,deduction and statistics theorems,which reflect the move with the times and systematic perspective of Duan.On the philosophy aspect,Duan’s research on vocabulary based on systematic methodology of linguistics and imaged his philosophic thought.
