| In recent years,Taiwanese Opera has expanded its involvement into modern theater, incorporating new theater forms and playwrights gradually breaking away from traditional modes of writing. This dissertation “A Study on the Playwriting of Modern Theater Taiwanese Opera” focuses attention to this playwriting trend. However, although Modern Theater Taiwanese Opera dates back to the 1980 s,in order to avoid repeating other research achievements and moreover provide a closer study of Taiwanese Opera’s current operating situation and tastes of the audience,I decided to focus on the developments of Taiwanese Opera after the 21 st century. The texts and playwrights mentioned in this dissertation include not only modern commercial productions, but also niche market’s experiments.I also included comparisons to outdoor Taiwanese Opera,Peking Opera and Fujian Opera, etc.,with the aim to present a detailed analysis and clear understanding of modern Taiwanese Opera. As a Taiwanese Opera playwright myself,I am able to draw from this perspective and highlight the difficulties between theoretical analysis and actual writing practices.Aside from the introduction and conclusion, the structure of this dissertation has been divided into three parts. In the first chapter,“Modern Theater Taiwanese Opera” is defined by introducing its history and the research achievements of other scholars.Meanwhile,I also named the key indexes of playwriting. In the second chapter, playwrights’ writing backgrounds, text modes, writing skills and inner connotations are discussed to provide a general overview of playwriting, its characteristics and the difficulties it faces. In the last chapter, based on specific plays,I analyze different playwrights’ writing styles and troupes’ operating strategies, giving diverse examples to illustrate the main trends and niche market, commercial and experimental modern theater Taiwanese Opera. |
