Iron and steel industry is an energy-intensive and re source-intensive industry.Therefore,improving energy efficiency of iron and steel production has always been the focus of energy conservation in China.Over the past two decades,China's steel enterprises have dramatically improved energy efficiency by means of production structure adjustment and technological progress.At present,energy saving technologies are widely used in steel enterprises in China,and the popularization rate of many energy-saving technologies has reached the first place in the world.However,energy intensity(EI)gap still exists between China's key steel enterprises and the world's most advanced level.In the future,how to reduce the EI of steel production is still an important issue.On this basis,a series studies have been carried out on energy consumption of China's steel production in this paper.(1)The development of steel industry is introduced.Literature on energy consumption,energy efficiency evaluation,energy saving potential analysis,power load management in industrial production are reviewed.At the same time,according to the current situation of China's steel industry,the influence of typical energy consumption influence factors are analyzed,as well as the relationship between them and their mutual constraints.(2)A new EI index-energy intensity at specific scrap ratio(EISR)—is developed to provide a method for analyzing the El difference in steel production,and determinants analyzed in this paper include:technical level,scrap ratio(SR)and production structure,etc.The causes of EI change of steel production in key steel enterprises in China from 2006 to 2016 are analyzed,and the influence of production technology,SR,production structure and power generation technology on El of steel production are analyzed.In addition,Japan has been considered to be the most energy efficiency country in steel production in the world,and the EI of China's steel industry is higher compared with that of Japan.EISR index is used to find out the reasons for the EI gap between China's key steel enterprises and Japan's steel enterprises,and analyze the influence of technology level,SR and power generation technology level on the EI gap.(3)Two power load management methods for steel industry are proposed in this paper based on the fact that steel industry is a big power consumer,namely power load control in production process and peak load shifting(PLS)utilization mode of coal gas.The proposed modes can help steel industry save electricity bills through the introduction of a time-of-use tariff.Given that China produces about half of the world's total steel production,the power load management will have a great effect on balancing the power grid.A simulated operation model for PLS coal-fired power units is used to calculate the energy conservation and emission reduction effect under different scenarios,and PLS units in low-load mode and two-shifting operation mode are both considered.Result shows that power load management in steel production can save the cost of electricity,and have a great effect on balancing the power grid,which is helpful to improve power generation efficiency of PLS units,reduce coal consumption and pollutant emission of power generation.(4)A multivariate energy intensity model is developed for energy saving potential analysis based on the research on China's energy statistics indexes,which is able to capture the impacts of production routes,technology progress,industrial concentration,energy structure,and electricity(proportion and generation efficiency).Results show that increasing SR of China's steel industry has the greatest energy saving effect,and increasing proportion of natural gas,technical progress of CR10 enterprises,and technical progress of small-scale enterprises can also decrease the El of China's steel industry.
