This doctoral thesis aims to explore the community of the university teachers which is constructed as an ideal type in order to explain the university teachers' social responsibilities and historical missions.The community of the university teacher is a self-orgnization with the shared objectives,knowledge and criteria of value.Every member of the community gets united to strive for their common interests and protect academic freedom,and standardize the order of academic activities to play different parts in the autonomous organization.The perception of affiliation and acceptance are the spiritual tie linking the members of the community.This social system is formed in various cultural patterns in history.Different from other experimental and speculative research,this thesis collects data based on the ideal type,applies deep description method to analyze the behavior and value orientation of the western and Chinese university communities,presents their formation and development comprehensively,including the process of their undertaking of social responsibilities.After analyzing the serious problems found in our universities profoundly,the thesis makes several proposals to improve the development of our communities of the university teachers.The qualitative research method and comparative research method are used to investigate the western and Chinese university communities and built our substantive theory applying an analytical methods and framework on the basis of social reference group theory.The content is divided into three parts,including five chapters.The first part includes the introduction and the first chapter,which is the historical research and theoretical research on the community of the University Teachers.This part is mainly to define the concepts of this topic,including the reasons,significances and research framework for writing the topic,and clarifying some important concepts and their features.Chapter one is the theoretical interpretation of the community.After exploring the origin of community and the original communities of the university teacher(the teacher communities,corporations,guilds,associations and faculties),the thesis is focus on many questions about defining the ideal type of the community of the university teacher,besides the content of the three value orientations of them and the features of them.The second part analyzes the produce and development of the community of the University Teachers from the two key dimensions of the internal and external relations of them.The thesisanalyzes the university teacher community's rights and interests and responsibilities,besides the social status,social roles,and social functions.Chapter Two is the historical research on the foundation of the university teacher community,explore the university teacher community's formation,development and how did it become the unique nature of University organization.Chapter three is the fundamental analysis of the lawful status and social function of a university teacher community and focus in the university autonomy,academic freedom,academic standard and teachers' ethics of the rights and interests of the university teachers' community.Chapter Four is the analysis of the internal and external responsibilities of a western university teacher community.At last,it is the theoretical basis of the study of university teacher community from the interdisciplinary perspective,the social functions and organizational attributes of in-depth analysis university teacher community.The third part of the thesis is to study the realistic problems,including the fifth chapter and the conclusion.This part describes the historical development and theoretical analysis of the Chinese university teacher community based on reality.It focus in the conditions of the forming of our communities of contemporary universities,and the realistic problems of our communities of contemporary universities.It investigates the reasons of the problems from the aspect of the relationship between government and University.It points out the lack of university spirit and independence in our university education.The referential experience from the west is put forward in order to construct the contemporary university teachers' community.The aim of this thesis is to discus how to realize the organic integration of the idea of University and social needs of the problems in the contemporary context.The realization of social function and role of the contemporary university teacher community needs to be improved in our universities.At last,it is the future research prospect.
