| Innovations in mobile technology are occurring at a rapid pace. Mobile phone software applications (apps) in particular have great potential within the field of mental health. Lack of organizational oversight and hesitancy from providers to utilize mobile technology has delayed technological advancement---consequently limiting the ability of the field to decrease the prevalence of mental illness. There is movement in the field, however, towards developing good quality apps to treat psychological problems. In order to distinguish which apps are of a high caliber, it will be important for the field to have a standardized way of evaluating apps. Additionally, more mental health professionals need to be equipped and empowered to become involved in mental health app development and utilization. |
