Abstract/Summary:
This project was designed to develop youth appreciation of sacred music in the Black church and was originally used at New Sardis Baptist Church, Memphis, Tennessee. Methods used were workshops, a live radio broadcast, and surveys. The curriculum bridged generational communication gaps and stressed the importance of spirituals, hymns, gospel, and contemporary Christian music using techniques developed to educate and stimulate creativity. Qualitative and quantitative methods were used to evaluate this model curriculum. Results of the data and comments revealed that youth came to understand the importance of preserving their legacy of African-American religious music culture.
