This study examined the mediating role of working memory, inhibition, temporal processing, task switching, and processing speed in age differences in episodic memory and more complex indicators of executive processing using a classic path analysis approach. Complex mediational models were found to fully account for age differences. Working memory, temporal processing and inhibition as well as processing speed were found to be critical determinants of declines in older adults performance. Perseverative behavior on the WCST reflected the interaction of multiple cognitive processes with inhibitory control, temporal processing, task switching, and processing speed mediators of age differences. Age-related slowing of working memory mediated declines in verbal fluency. Task switching did not emerge as a significant contributor. Results also supported age-related slowing and declines in inhibition as mediators of working memory deficits. |
