According to the Arizona Department of Economic Security's Research Population and Statistics Unit, Arizona was the twelfth fastest growing state in the United States. By the year 2000, it was estimated that 1,252,300 new residents will make their homes in Arizona. With so many new citizens coming to the State of Arizona, a means to educate new and current residents about Arizona's history and natural environment was needed. Ali-shonak: A Historical and Environmental Overview of Arizona attempted to provide a computer data base of information to meet the need of any individual who wished to learn about Arizona. This computerized program allowed individuals in schools and libraries to learn about Arizona's basic historical facts, to learn about the state's natural environment and to acquire basic knowledge about the animals and plants that make Arizona their homes. Finally, because of Arizona's diverse natural environment, the last section of this data base provided the user with basic knowledge about outdoor safety and survival.
