Abstract/Summary:
The study was designed to determine and compare the role level expectations of Ohio's technical college deans of instruction, as perceived by themselves, their presidents, their department heads, and their faculty.;The responses of all the respondent groups were tallied for both individual administrative areas and all individual items. The significance of differences among responses were analyzed through use of the statistical technique Analysis of Variance with Duncan's Multiple Range Test employed to determine significant differences in the group interactions. The tests of significant differences were made at the .05 level of confidence.;The analysis of the data gathered indicated that the respondent groups differed significantly in their responses a total of 21 times within seven role expectations. The technical faculty also differed significantly in their overall responses in the administrative areas of staff relations and administrative planning. Thus it was determined that the respondent groups do differ in their role expectations for the dean of instruction position.;In addition to testing the two main hypotheses, additional rank-order analysis was performed to determine the ten most preferred and ten least preferred role expectations. The most preferred role expectation for the dean as evidenced by the highest overall mean score for each of the five occupational groups was in the administrative area of staff relations--the dean should be honest and dependable in dealing with staff members. The least preferred role expectation also was in the administrative area of staff relations--the dean should make curriculum changes without consulting the teaching staff.;A research instrument consisting of 72 statements in the administrative areas of Administrative Leadership, Administrative Planning, Community Responsibility, Initiating Structure and Staff Relations was completed by the respondent groups.;Rank-order analysis was also completed for the five administrative areas for all occupational groups. The objective was to determine the administrative area role expectations most preferred by the occupational groups. The Administrative Planning area was given the highest mean score by all five groups.;Suggestions were made for additional research in this area.
