Abstract/Summary:
This study examined the relationships between personal, political, geographic, socio-economic, and demographic factors and the perceptions of conflict and cooperation of Turkey's metropolitan municipality officials. In order to find the answers for the research questions, this research utilized a mixed methodology approach, consisting of quantitative and social network analysis. The quantitative analysis revealed that political party affiliation of mayors, location, socioeconomic development, and population of the cities all have significant effects on perceptions of cooperation of district municipalities with their metropolitan municipalities. Also, political party affiliations of mayors, political popularity of district mayors, and location of cities have significant effects on conflict perceptions of district municipalities. Social network analysis of the study revealed that, compared to politicians, professionals of metropolitan municipalities have stronger relationships and higher prestige scores than district municipality officials. This study also suggested some possible policy implications for effective functioning of the Turkish metropolitan governance system.
