Facing the rapid development of social modern urban environment,low-income groups are required to adapt to the paces and concepts of the city rapidly.Low-income groups not only feel a great sense of helplessness but are also unable to meet the requirements of adapting to the new environment due to the unavailability of resources. With the acceleration of housing construction in China the important effect of mixed-income communities on the social adaptability of low-income groups with limited access to housing should be discussed in more depth.Ensuring social harmony and stability and the sound development of low-income groups urgently require the clarification of the relationship between the neighborhood environment of the current mixed-income community and of the social adaptability of low-income groups which can be accelerated by a reasonable resource allocation to low-income groups facing adaptation difficulties.Based on resource conservation theory, reference group theory, and social capital theory,an influence model of neighboring behavior on the social adaptability of low-income groups is constructed in this research.First, literature on these theories is reviewed and relevant theoretical foundations are outlined. Then, concepts and the corresponding measurements of the related core variables including neighboring behavior, social adaptability, mental health, consumption choices, and achievements in upbringing of offspring are defined. On this basis, the theoretical framework of and hypotheses related to the research are proposed and constructed. The following three hypotheses are formulated in this research.First, the mediating effect of mental health on the relationship between neighboring behavior and social adaptability originates in the individual processing stage.Second, the mediating effect of consumption choices targeting survival, development and enjoyment is constructed based on the relationship between neighboring behavior and social adaptability from both dynamic and static perspectives.Third,in the intergenerational processing stage a path with achievements in the upbringing of offspring as the mediating variable is constructed to explore the complicated chain-like mediating effect of the variable on the relationship between neighboring behavior and social adaptability of low-income parents. In this study 26 valid data samples for inductive analysis and 1,993 valid data samples for empirical research on low-income groups and their children in mixed-income communities. As the inductive analysis method knowledge mapping and semi-structured interviews were used to clarify the factors affecting social adaptability.Logical connections of each factor were established by theoretical deduction, and the questionnaire survey commonly used in empirical research was employed to verify the proposed hypotheses.Specifically, the knowledge map was adopted to conduct cluster analysis of the influencing factors of the existing social adaptability research.According to the inductive analysis of the qualitative verification map cluster, seven main factors affecting the social adaptability of low-income groups in China were summarized including factors of psychology, economy, education, etc. In this way,a full understanding of the status quo of social adaptability of low-income groups was obtained which satisfied the analysis needs of this research.Frequency analysis and theory-driven methods were used to analyze the influence of neighboring behavior on the social adaptability of low-income groups.Concerning the mechanism from the three perspectives of mental health, consumption choices and achievements in upbringing of offspring,a research model was constructed and related hypotheses were proposed. In the questionnaire survey of the empirical part, four rounds of data collection were conducted with a total of1,993 valid data samples including 296 in Sample 1,97 in Sample 2,388 in Sample 3,and 1,212 in Sample 4.Methods such as regression analysis, machine learning and ecological measurement were applied to verify the research model and the related hypotheses in this study. The results of the empirical analysis reveal the influence and mechanism of neighboring behavior in mixed-income communities on the social adaptability of low-income groups.First, neighboring behavior can positively affect the social adaptability of low-income groups.Second, this positive influence is affected through mental health and developmental consumption choices in the individual processing stage as well as through the achievements in upbringing of offspring in the intergenerational processing stage. Finally, neighboring behavior can exert a positive impact on the social adaptability of low-income groups in the dual-generational processing stage and the chain-like mediating effect of the achievements in upbringing of offspring not only through the mental health but also through developmental consumption choices.Based on the analysis of the tests and the obtained results for the path effect of the above three main aspects, the following recommendations concerning the management of low-income groups in mixed-income communities are discussed. To assist low-income groups in the improvement of neighborhood communication and of social adaptability it is advised to break the homogeneous social circle and treat consumption choices in a rational way;community platforms shall be offered to low-income groups for good neighborhood interactions through community intervention;the behavior of employees in mixed-income communities shall be standardized especially in terms of the provision of affordable housing and proper handling of heterogeneous intra-neighborhood relationships;a holistic urban planning shall be implemented and public resources shall be appropriately allocated inside and outside the community with the aim to mitigate the negative effects of isolation and exclusion in mixed-income communities and to provide a theoretical basis and practical guidance for promoting neighboring behavior in mixed-income communities and for improving social adaptability of low-income groups.
