Research On Missionary Physician Gao Silan And Her Compilatio

This dissertation takes British missionary and physician Philip B.Cousland as the research object.By collecting and sorting out all the information related to him,and focucing on his most representative An English-Chinese Lexicon of Medical Terms,translation of four western medical works and articles from the China Medical Missionary Journal,it records his life experience in practicing and preaching in China,compiling and publishing western medical works,and promoting the standardization of Chinese translation of western medical terminology.[Research Purpose] By emphasizing on Cousland‘s major events in China,the dissertation aimed to focus on how he led and promoted the process of Chinese translation of western medical terms,and analyze the gains and losses he and Medical Missionary Association of China had obtained,to ponder its contemporary significance and enlightenment to the global dissemination of TCM,especially the standardized translation of TCM terminology.[Research Methods] Through literature retrieval,the author collected and sorted out from multiple sources as many first-hand materials as possible,covering domestic and foreign missionary archives,different versions of Medical Lexicon and personal translations from libraries and institutions,medical papers and discourse from the CMMJ and online databases.Comprehensive analysis was made employing multiple perspectives such as literature textual research,semantic analysis,qualitative and quantitative study,and comparative translation,etc.[Research Results] Cousland had practiced,preached,and apprenticed in Chao-chow and Swatow for over two decades.He presided over the compilation of multiple editions of Medical Lexicon by the Terminology Committee and organized the translation and publishment of a series of western medical books.He also participated in the establishment of the Nurses‘ Association of China and the Union Terminology Committee.His articles in the CMMJ focused on his insights regarding medical education,and recorded the cases and epidemic observations he had encountered.The Medical Lexion he compiled had excelled in its time in knowledge sources,edition updates,writing style,translation principles and the evolution of translated words.His personal translations also exemplified the advantages of translated works by the CMMA in disseminating western medicine in terms of the selection of original works,knowledge structure,translation style,and cooperation of translators.[Research Conclusions] Cousland‘s historical contributions mainly involve saving lives,popularizing science,cultivating native doctors,and laying a foundation for western medicine,as well as promoting standardization of medical terminology,presiding over the publishing of western medical works,framing medical education,and supporting the establishment of medical societies.The translation of medical terms by him and the CMMA had served as foundation and norm for the successful Chinese translation of western medical terminology,providing reflection on TCM translation from aspects such as standardization of Chinese medical terminology,diversification of translated literature,internationalization of the cultivation of TCM translators,and the foresight of national policy formulation.
