The realistic oil painting in the Period of the Republic of China is a very important period in the 100-year history of Chinese oil painting,and it is a stage of enlightenment and development with far-reaching influence.Facing with problems at home and abroad,many young artists influenced by new ideas and new culture,with a strong sense of social responsibility and historic sense of mission,decided to study abroad,and spread the results through China.Artists in Department of Art,Central University such as Xu Beihong occupies a dominant position in the area of oil painters.This paper focuses on the spread of realistic oil paintings in Department of Art,Central University represented by Xu Beihong in the Period of the Republic of China,demonstrating and discussing the "mode of transmission" and "artistic pursuit".Aimming at putting the realistic oil painting in the broad historical and cultural background of the period of the republic of China,that focused on Department of Art,Central University.combing the art activities,and thoughts and works of art of the painters represented by Xu Beihong,in order to have a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of Xu Beihong’s realistic oil painting that has various forms and rich connotation.The full text is divided into five chapters,mainly to solve two problems: first,to discuss the transmission mode of Xu Beihong and other oil painters’ realistic oil painting;Second,to analyse the concrete connotation of realistic oil painting advocated by Xu Beihong and other oil painters.According to the structure of the article,the first chapter is an overview of the background of the spreading of realistic oil paintings by Xu Beihong and other oil painters;The second chapter explores the origin of Xu Beihong and other oil painters’ artistic styles by recalling their overseas study.The third chapter respectively discusses the art education and exhibition,as well as art society in order to highlight the dominant position of realistic oil painting practiced by the oil painters represented by Xu Beihong in Nanjing and even in the whole country at that time.Chapter four and chapter five are the focus of this paper,demonstrating the realistic oil paintings advocate the combination of Chinese and Western features through the analysis of Xu Beihong and other oil painters’ specific art works and thoughts,in order to highlight their historical and realistic significance.
