This paper combs the historical context of book design exchanges between China and Germany since the 20 th century.This paper uses the research method of historical stages,combines the history of design with the history of cultural exchange,takes the development and changes of China Germany social system,science and technology,and foreign policy in the 20 th century as the background,and takes the activities of people involved in book design exchanges between the two countries and the physical inspection as the main clue.Through sorting out the main characteristics,changes in communication methods,and comparison of representative works of book design exchanges between China and Germany,Outline the historical appearance of Sino German book design exchanges in various historical periods of the 20 th century,and summarize the characteristics of Sino German book design exchanges in the 20 th century.From the perspective of historical stages,the Sino German book design exchange in the 20 th century went through four periods: the German occupation of Qingdao,the Republic of China period,the founding of New China to the pre reform and opening up,and the reform and opening up to the present;From the perspective of the characteristics of communication context,it has experienced the transformation of historical context,such as the context of colonialism,the context of western learning,the context of reference and integration,and the context of pluralistic change;From the perspective of communication subject,it has experienced the identity changes from missionaries to cultural scholars,foreign students to designers;From the perspective of communication channels,the book design exchange between China and Germany in the 20 th century was composed of a series of events such as book exchange,translation,exhibition,trade and education;From the perspective of communication mode,Sino German book design exchange has experienced the process of Chinese book design from passive acceptance to active absorption to active integration.This paper attempts to sort out the development context,experience value and influence of book design exchange between the two countries from a series of foreign exchange figures and cultural events.From the perspective of historical clues,the diplomatic relations between China and Germany and the major political and diplomatic decisions of the two countries are undoubtedly the important background influencing the book design exchange between the two countries.This paper discusses the role and influence of Germany in the transformation of Chinesebook design in the context of Sino German exchanges,and discusses the reasons for the evolution of Sino German book design exchange mechanism.The key problem is to analyze the ways,ways and characteristics of Sino German book design exchanges in different historical stages,as well as how the discourse of book design emerged in the design exchanges between the two countries,and the interactive logical relationship between the designs of the two countries,so as to explore the artistic characteristics of Sino German book design exchanges in different historical contexts in the 20 th century,and thus summarize the inspiration and significance of Sino German book design exchanges in the 20 th century.Based on Foucault’s theory of “knowledge power”,this paper builds a narrative framework with the concepts of “power " and " discourse”,and sets knowledge power as the main theoretical analysis basis for Sino German book design exchanges.It holds that in the book design exchanges between the two countries,the four historical stages show different political systems,different cultural policies,different contexts and classes,and different design exchange subjects through political power,spiritual power The secular power influenced the Sino German book design exchange in the 20 th century in many aspects,such as design concept,design style and design function.This paper first analyzes the history of the development of Chinese and German book design in the 20 th century through a longitudinal survey,and then discusses the understanding,understanding,misreading and reconstruction of German book design in different periods of the modern transformation of Chinese book design through the role and influence of the concept of German book design in four different periods from modern China to modern China.Book design cannot be separated from the social context and cultural tradition of the subject.Therefore,the exchange between China and foreign countries will bring about changes in the design context.At the same time,the changes in the social environment between China and Germany will continue to affect designers’ creative ideas and behaviors.In general,in the 20 th century,Chinese book design exchange experienced conflict,collision,reference and misreading from the design system established by the discourse power of western countries,thus establishing the self discourse system of book design;The essence of this process is that the discourse power of the communication subject makes the Sino German book design communication gradually break away from the aesthetics of the political system and enter the aesthetics of daily life.From the perspective of the construction of "rationality" of the integration of the design concepts of the two countries into each other’s society,it is inevitable that the Sino German bookdesign exchange always reflects the reality of the discourse power of the two countries’ political and diplomatic relations,and also reflects the cultural influence of the two countries on cultural identity and national image in the exchange,resulting in obvious changes in technology,style and form in the book design of the two countries in the 20 th century.This paper verifies that the book design exchange between China and Germany in the 20 th century is an important driving force to promote the progress of book design in both countries and the development of design history through the sorting of historical data.The main points of this paper are as follows: First,the book design exchange between China and Germany in the 20 th century experienced four different historical stages,showing changes in book design patterns,reflecting the exchange characteristics of different times;Second,the characteristics of Sino German book design communication in the 20 th century changed with the change of social trends and the subjective consciousness of communication groups;Third,the purpose of Sino German book design exchange in the 20 th century was influenced by ideology,geopolitics and foreign policy;Fourthly,the book design exchange between China and Germany in the20 th century reflected the dominance of the national will and the inspiration of national feelings to a certain extent.The exchange of book design between China and Germany in the 20 th century can promote the scientific and rational development and progress of each other’s design,and at the same time organize,criticize and reshape their own traditional design,which has many theoretical and practical significance in promoting the development of the diversity of world design culture.This paper uses a variety of research methods,such as literature collection,field research,interviews,and work comparison,to restore the overall historical outlook of Sino German book design exchanges in the20 th century.It reveals that China’s overall communication logic is closely related to the construction of discourse power caused by colonialism,nationalism,political system,globalization,etc.from the initial collision,confrontation and adaptation of German book design,to the reference and learning,accommodation and adaptation in the context of the spread of Western learning to the East,and to the communication mechanism for the establishment of national design identity in the context of consensus and debate.In the process of Sino German book design exchange,Chinese book design has gone through different evolution stages of discipline,imitation,regulation and reorganization at the discourse construction level,which is also matched with the great structure of China’s ideological and cultural transformation and social transformation.On the basis of combing and analyzing,this paper further proposes that the Sino German book design exchange is a process of actively shaping and cultural identity confirmation on the basis of the truth,accuracy and sincerity of the value "rationality",and can build the national cultural image through an effective discourse mechanism,thus forming the consensus value and self identity expression of the design of the two countries,which may also become an ideal way of future book design exchange between the two countries.
