In the process of constant change of time,"Printmaking",due to its own special properties and technical skills,is facing the changes of times and historical circumstances under the different cultural backgrounds of China and the West.Printmaking has become a unique type of art,mainly because of its presented form due to special production process.The formation of the form of the work is also related to the internal language structure of the painting and the painter’s aesthetic orientation,in which "the Nature of Process" plays a key role.This paper studies the "the nature of process" of printmaking based on the unique historical development track of prints,and analyzes the specific production process of printmakers in the constantly changing print technology and concept."The nature of process" includes the influence of the changes of times on the form,technology,and concept of printmaking,and also contains the phenomenon caused when the producer injects his ideas into the print as a special medium in the specific production process.The linear historical development process and the specific creative practice process together constitute the two dimensions of the "the nature of process" of printmaking,and also become an important way to recognize the connotation and extension of printmaking.This topic will discuss how printmaking transformed from a copy and communication tool to a medium for artistic creation in the historical evolution,through the following research path: the social fiction of printmaking,the evolution of the identity of the producer,and the development of technology and the process of the continuous extension of its concept.It also discusses the reasons why printmaking,as a tool of communication,not only does not die out in the innovation of printing technology and the continuous emergence of artistic thoughts,but also creates a new way of technology and a new way of understanding its concept.Through analyzing the particularity of printmaking,this paper analyzes how the "indirectness" of printmaking,which refers to the process of indirect platemaking,creates the dispute field of game and fusion between the producer and the creation material.In the specific process of engraving production,the social identity of the producer affects one’s perspective and determines one’s attitude and path in this process.When viewing the engraving creation process from the perspective of technology or media,we will get totally different production experience and work presentation results.After printmakers in different eras keep building out its inherent production procedures and technical means,prints reversely guide the printmakers’ patterns of behavior and thinking path,and make the producer’s relationship with prints connected by competing and completing each other.This makes printmaking not only a "channel" for the creator to realize his or her own creative idea,but also a way to show his or her own possibility through the practice process of the creator.When modernism and postmodernism arrived,printmaking turned from the practical field to the artistic creation field,and its early internal structure and technical paradigm were interpreted and gradually dissolved in a new way.After postmodernism,the boundary between different painting types and even the concept of art are constantly blurred.When the original concept of printmaking entered the field of modern and contemporary art creation,the concept of "signifier" of printmaking has been difficult to accommodate its category of "signified".The reason is that today’s art has become a kind of "the art of interpretation",people know art need to be explained by a set of system.It’s is very difficult to access to art without a explanation and instruction.Under such circumstances,the attributes of each type,such as convexity,concavity,flatness,leakage and the unique indirectness,plurality and procedure of prints,have all become the elements for artists to re-examine.Therefore,drawing on semiotics and postmodern theory,this paper discusses the possibility of artistic creation brought by stretch of printmaking concepts,and analysis the way and path to engraving under this situation.The current trend of art development is moving towards the unknown,and the cognitive way of art and even print art is changing constantly with the progress of the age.The study of "the nature of process" in this paper is to change the way of understanding art to the understanding of "process".From the current position,we can look back at the characteristics of printmaking,a special way of image making,in the linear historical process and the specific creation process of the producers.In this way,we can bridge the gap between artists’ creation concept and people’s cognition of their works,and make clear the possible path of printmaking when facing the unknown future.The "unknown" and "possible" contained in the printmaking art expand towards its future while looking back at the history.
