Ye Qianyu(1907-1995),formerly known as Ye Lunqi,was born in Tonglu County,Zhejiang Province,with a pen name of "Chu Meng" and "Xing Tian".He is a well-known cartoonist,Chinese painter and art educator.Around the 1930s,Ye Xianyu was engaged in cartoon creation in Shanghai and became the pioneer of modern Chinese cartoons.His cartoon character "Mr.Wang" was all the rage.Yu Feng once said,"Shanghai in the 1930s was the pioneer of modern Chinese art,and Ye Xianyu was the peak of comics in the 1930s.".From the 1940s,Ye Qianyu began to create traditional Chinese painting and was good at dancing figures and dramatic figure painting.In 1944,Ye Qianyu held the first Chinese painting exhibition in Chongqing.After watching the exhibition,Xu Beihong praised that "Qian Yu’s traditional Chinese painting is as skilled as sketching characters;therefore,he has no difficulty in both straight and curved forms.He chooses the best,captures the essentials,and does not avoid taboos.This is so excellent in traditional Chinese painting.In the past five hundred years,only Qiu Shizhou and Wu Youru have made great achievements in art."After the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949,he has successively served as the Vice Chairman of the National Artists Association,the Chairman/Professor of the Department of Traditional Chinese Painting of the Central Academy of Fine Arts,the Vice President of the Chinese Painting Research Institute,a member of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles,and a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.He has made outstanding achievements in the creation,research,and teaching of Chinese painting.He has published Selected Works of Ye Qianyu,Painted Dances of Ye Qianyu,etc.,and has written Ten Years of RidiculousDreams,and Chronicles of Changes.This paper takes Ye Qianyu’s Chinese painting as the main research object,and puts forward the concept of "new freehand brushwork" Chinese painting.It believes that starting from the perspective of "new freehand brushwork" Chinese painting will help to accurately and deeply study Ye Qianyu’s thinking and exploration of Chinese painting.The main content of this article is divided into five parts to discuss five issues related to Ye Qianyu’s "new freehand brushwork" Chinese painting:The first part,mainly from the subjective and objective aspects,discusses why Ye Qianyu turned to Chinese painting creation in the 1940s,and then discusses the influence of Ye Qianyu’s cartoon creation experience on his turning to Chinese painting creation,as well as the division of several stages of Ye Qianyu’s Chinese painting creation.The second part,the transition from cartoon creation to Chinese painting creation is a great change for Ye Qianyu.In order to successfully complete the transition,Ye Qianyu has made a lot of preparatory work by consulting contemporary Chinese painters,studying Chinese painting traditions,studying painting history and painting theory,and strengthening sketch training,which laid a foundation for his Chinese painting creation.In the third part,this paper defines Ye Qianyu’s Chinese painting creation as "new freehand brushwork" Chinese painting.This part analyzes and discusses in which aspects Ye Qianyu’s Chinese painting creation reflects new ideas from five aspects:new ideas,new themes,new techniques,new languages,and new aesthetic feelings,and fully explains what is "new freehand brushwork".In the fourth part,while being good at Chinese painting,Ye Xianyu also paid attention to theoretical thinking,wrote many insightful academic articles,and formed a unique painting thought.This part focuses on analyzing Ye Qianyu’s traditional view,sketching view,creation view,self-cultivation view and teaching view.The fifth part focuses on the influence and value of Ye Qianyu and his "new freehand brushwork" traditional Chinese painting,pointing out that Ye’s personality,painting style,painting concept,etc.have far-reaching influence in the field of traditional Chinese painting,and have important value in many fields such as cultural field,social field,etc.Ye Qianyu’s Chinese painting is a subject worthy of further study.Through the research of this topic,we can connect many related problems of Chinese painting and Chinese art in the 20th century.So far,considerable achievements have been made in the study of Ye Xianyu’s Chinese paintings,but these achievements still have problems such as insufficient discussion and unclear topics.For this reason,this paper chooses the perspective of "new freehand brushwork" Chinese painting to carry out research,and has certain innovation in research perspective,viewpoint,etc.,in order to promote the research of Ye Qianyu’s Chinese painting.In order to successfully complete the research,this paper referred to a large number of personal literature,research literature on Ye Qianyu and other literature materials in the research process,and comprehensively used image analysis,comparison,interpretation and other research methods.
