The relationship between Ku Shih Pien and the new text study of confucian classics is a very important issue in the 20th century Chinese academic history.It is a prerequisite to understand this problem to identify academic value of the new text study of confucian classics.The findings of the new text study of confucian classics and the interpretations of those findings are two different things.The discovery of the new text study of confucian classics is based on the textual evidence,and the doubts raised by the confucianists on this basis can also be a problem.As for the theory of Liu Xin forged the old text study of confucian classics and the theory of Tuogu Gaizhi,it also has its academic aspect.Therefore,the academic value of the new text study of confucian classics should not be ignored.The starting point of Gu Jiegang’s knowledge is bibliography,which touches on the field of dialectics.The appearance of Inquiring about Yao Jiheng’s Writings is a sign that prompts him to turn to dialectics of classics.Before putting forward the theory of stratification,Gu Jiegang always kept a distance from the theory of the new text study of confucian classics,which was not the necessary condition for the theory of stratification.After putting forward the theory of stratification,he began to notice the academic value of the theory of Tuogu Gaizhi,and his attitude towards the new text study of confucian classics changed accordingly.This change will inevitably affect Gu Jiegang’s retrospection of the past views on the new text study of confucian classics.The existing researches have changed the influence of contemporary classics on the theory of stratification from the driving force to the source.From the theory of stratification to the textual research of the Three Emperors,Gu Jiegang completed the plan of overthrowing the ancient history system.After accepting the theory of Tuogu Gaizhi,whether Liu Xin forged the old text study of confucian classics becomes the problem Gu Jiegang has to face.Based on solid historical evidence,he believed that there was a possibility of Liu Xin forged the old text study of confucian classics,and this judgment made him more favorable to the new text study of confucian classics.Gu Jiegang’s status as a historian was therefore questioned,and the academic status of Ku Shih Pien became precarious.The two sides of the argument are not conceding,but they are no longer assigned to solve the problem by the confucianists,and these discussions are carried out in the sense of history rather than confucian classics.The end of Ku Shih Pien does not mean the end of Gu Jiegang’s study of ancient history,and the new text study of confucian classics still occupied the core position of his academic research.Gu Jiegang still sticks to the previous academic judgment,and tries to find new evidence to prove his theory.Although Gu Jiegang wanted to put an end to the case of confucian classics,he was in a dilemma because he could not completely solve the problem just by insisting on the theory of Liu Xin forged the old text study of confucian classics and the theory of Tuogu Gaizhi.In this process,Gu Jiegang was also attacked by the new text study of confucian classics,but this does not mean Gu Jiegang went on the old road of classical scholars.Gu Jiegang was also forced to re-examine his relationship with the new text study of confucian classics,which also added many twists and turns to the later research.
