| As one of the most influential works in the history of Mongols literature,New Translation of A Dream of Red Mansions showed the translation techniques of Mongolian scholar after a long time of experience,and also deeply reflected the artistic achievements of Mongolian scholars in studying Chinese classical novels.In the late Qing Dynasty,Hasibao,a Mongolian writer and translator,introduced the translation of A Dream of Red Mansions,one of the four great masterpieces in the history of Chinese literature,into the Mongolian region with his good literary attainment and exquisite translation techniques.His finished work,New Translation of A Dream of Red Mansions,gave new vitality to the original work of A Dream of Red Mansions in terms of plot content,character images and cultural heritage.Hasibao was well versed in the art of literature,had the skills of Mongolian and Chinese languages,and had a good understanding of the grammar of Chinese classical novels.Therefore,his New Translation of A Dream of Red Mansions was an artistic work of unique value in all aspects,and it also became a shining star in the history of Mongols literature,the history of Redology,and even in the history of ancient Chinese novels.The research objects of the dissertation submitted for evaluation are A Dream of Red Mansions,one of the four great masterpieces in the history of Chinese literature and its translated work New Translation of A Dream of Red Mansions,with the aim of studying textual variations in the translation process and analyzing the reasons behind the variations.To conduct a comparative study of the original and translated works from the perspective of variability,in order to obtain corresponding conclusions and provide valuable references for research in related fields.This dissertation submitted for evaluation consists of three chapters:introduction,main body,and summary.The first chapter is the introduction,which explains the purpose and significance of the topic selection in this dissertation,and analyzes the connections and differences between the two works based on the previous research findings of A Dream of Red Mansions and New Translation of A Dream of Red Mansions.This chapter also introduces the historical overview of Mongolian Chinese literary exchange and literary translation,and explains the importance of New Translation of A Dream of Red Mansions for ethical communication and cultural integration.Previous studies on New Translation of A Dream of Red Mansions have mainly focused on the identity of the translator,the time of completion of the work,literary theory and other aspects.This dissertation,from the perspective of translation variation,takes the texts of the two works as the main reference materials,and uses translation theories,literary theory,comparative methodology to study the underlying reasons behind the phenomenon of variation.The second chapter,main body,is divided into three sections,which are the variation of the storyline,character image variation,and cultural interpretation pattern.The first section mainly studies the variation of the storyline in New Translation of A Dream of Red Mansions.By sorting out the complete translation,abridged translation(combined translation)and untranslated parts,and compiling corresponding tables to show the variation of the storyline of New Translation of A Dream in Red Mansions.At the same time,an overview of the variation of the storyline is summarized from the three aspects: content,storyline structure,and temporal and spatial changes.In addition to studying the content structure of the storyline,this section also involves the study of “Paratexts” that have auxiliary effects on the storyline.By comparing the corresponding text tables between A Dream of Red Mansions and New Translation of A Dream of Red Mansions to list the revisions such as excerpts,additions,deletions,etc in Hasibo’s translation practice.On the basis of combining internal and external research on the two texts,the variation of the storyline of New Translation of A Dream of Red Mansions is presented more clearly.The second section mainly analyzes the variation of the character images compiled in New Translation of A Dream of Red Mansions comparing with A Dream of Red Mansions.This section presents the basic situation of Hasibo’s variation of character images in the original work A Dream of Red Mansions through the analysis of the variation of the Twelve beauties,male images,and lower level character images in the original work A Dream of Red Mansions.The variation of character images mainly reflects Hasibo’s high grasp of the original character images and deep understanding of the theme of "A Dream of Red Mansions" as a translator.The translator’s portrayal of character images and appropriate strengthening and weakening also reflect the translator’s excellent translation skills.The third section analyzes the cultural content contained in New Translation of A Dream of Red Mansions from a cultural perspective.While showcasing the additional national language and cultural imprints in New Translation of A Dream of Red Mansions,it explains the differences between the translated work and the original work at the textual level.By analyzing the variations in language and cultural content,it deeply summarizes the variations in the language level of New Translation of A Dream of Red Mansions,and analyzes the differences in the language and cultural content of the original work.The preservation of cultural content and the reasonable and appropriate interpretation of the original content all demonstrates the subjective spirit possessed by the translator Hasibo himself.Finally,from the perspectives of cultural understanding,cultural interpretation,the translator’s psychological identification with the cultural content formed in the social environment of the original author and the original author,as well as the ability to influence the inheritance of future readers,the true artistic value of New Translation of A Dream of Red Mansions was explored.The subjectivity of Hasibo throughout the entire translation practice process was elucidated,and the positive role that Hasibo and New Translation of A Dream of Red Mansions brought to the exchange of Mongolian and Chinese literature was affirmed.The last chapter of the dissertation generally summarizes the content of the main body,sorts out the translation variations in storyline,characters,and cultural content of Hasibo’s New Translation of A Dream in Red Mansions,discusses Hasibo’s valuable and profound translator subjectivity,thought on identifying Chinese culture,so then reveals Hasibo’s unique position as a historical witness of Mongolian Chinese cultural exchange.His translation practice fully demonstrates the context of Mongolian Chinese literary exchange.In addition,from the perspectives of cultural understanding,cultural attribution,and cultural inheritance,Hasibo’s translation practice does have certain practical significance. |
