Shen Zhureng was an Yi-ologist and Kanyu master of the late Qing Dynasty and early Republican of China. He was inspired by the richness of Han’s Yi studies hieroglyphic style and proposed a unique hieroglyphic mode of thinking and a novel method of interpreting Yi studies based on the Yi studies of Han Yi’s hieroglyphic masters such as Jing Fang,Yu Fan and Meng Xi.In the field of Yi’s Righteousness theory,he also developed a pragmatic conception of Yi’s Righteousness theory based on the Song Yi.In addition,Shen Zhureng was an influential Kanyu master in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republican of China, and his book shen’s Xuankong was of great importance in the field of Kanyu. This paper takes Shen Zhureng,a late Qing dynasty Yi scholar,as the object of study and provides a comprehensive and systematic explanation and discussion of his system of Yi thoughts, which consists of five chapters, the main contents of which are briefly described as follows:The first chapter introduces Shen Zhureng’s life, writings and the background of the Yi thoughts learning era in which he lived.Chapter One introduces Shen Zhureng’s life, writings and the background to his Yi Studies. It compares Shen Zhureng’s life experiences from his early childhood when he suffered from the military disaster to his lonely involvement in military and foreign affairs,as well as the basic situation of his Yi Studies writings. The four main books that make up Shen Zhureng’s thought on Yi are introduced, namely,Zhou Yi Yi Jie,Zhou Yi shi Er Lu,Zhou Yi shuo Yu,and Shen’s Xuan Kong Xue.Among them,Shen Zhureng’s ideas on hieroglyphic and yi-li Yi are mainly advanced in the first three books, while his ideas on Kanyu are mainly developed around the text Shen’s Xuan-Kong Studies.Secondly, the background to Shen Zhureng’s study of Yi in his time is broadly outlined, with the aim of demonstrating that Shen Zhureng’s style of Yi,which took inspiration from both the Han and Song dynasties, was inextricably linked to the development of Yi in the Qing dynasty. The rise and fall of Yi studies between the Han and Song dynasties and the mutual denunciation between the Han and Song schools of Yi studies in the Qing dynasty provided the food for thought for the development of Shen Zhureng’s Yi thought.Chapter 2 discusses Shen Zhureng’s hieroglyphics. It summarises the three main aspects of Shen Zhureng’s hieroglyphic thinking, namely,"image" and "shape","image" and "number",and "image" and "meaning",and sketches out Shen Zhureng’s hieroglyphic thinking. It summarises the three main aspects of Shen Zhureng’s hieroglyphic thinking: "image" and "shape","image" and "number","image" and "meaning",and outlines Shen Zhureng’s hieroglyphic thinking, explaining the basic pattern of Shen Zhureng’s hieroglyphic thinking and its form;secondly,it introduces Shen Zhureng’s method of interpreting words, which is largely derived from the Han Dynasty art of numbering.Secondly,he introduces Shen Zhureng’s method of interpretation, which is largely inspired by the techniques of the Han Dynasty, including the interpretation of words based on divination techniques and the method of taking images based on reciprocal bodies;thirdly,he introduces several special relationships that Shen Zhureng uses to interpret the trigrams of the Zhouyi, the sequence of the trigrams, and the trigram variations.Specifically,it discusses the special relationship patterns between the trigrams, such as "corresponding","bilinear",and "roam or wander".Chapter 3 explores Shen Zhureng’s Yi-ologist of moral principle. It aims to illustrate Shen Zhureng’s understanding of the role of Yi Studies.Shen combines the role of Yi Studies in the sense of Fang Technique and in the sense of philosophical guidance, arguing that there is only a small difference between Fang Technique and the philosophy and laws that guide people contained in the Zhou Yi,and that there is no difference between higher and lower.Shen Zhureng advocates an attitude of learning the principles of heaven and earth in order to understand righteousness, and this section mainly reflects Shen Zhureng’s basic understanding of righteousness and Yi.This section explains Shen Zhureng’s interpretation and understanding of the ethics and morality of human beings in the Zhou Yi.This section focuses on Shen Zhureng’s view of the practice of Zhou Yi.Shen Zhureng promotes the Confucian idea of a gentleman’s heart and a gentleman’s deeds, and asserts that the character of a gentleman must ultimately be tested in the deeds of a gentleman before it can be proven.Through the self-correction of "fear",Shen Zhugeng proposes a practical programme to move the individual from self-cultivation and gentlemanly self-consciousness to family and state governance and ideal politics. In the interpretation of this sector of thought,Shen Zhureng also demonstrates a certain revolutionary progressiveness by proposing a selfless interpretation of the virtue of the "Qian" trigram based on the idea that "all for the public.Chapter 4 explores the geography of Shen Zhureng. The chapter proceeds from two aspects.i.It discusses the object of study and the basic connotations of geography. It explains the research perspective of traditional geography centred on the philosophical ideas in geography.Secondly,it explores the interchangeable relationship between Shen Zhureng’s geography and hieroglyphics through several key issues of metaphysical geography, introduces the core theories and innovative focus of Shen Zhureng’s metaphysics, and sorts out the deep connections between Shen Zhureng’s metaphysics and hieroglyphics.Chapter 5 explores the development of Shen Zhureng’s Ideas on traditional Yi Studies. This chapter discusses four aspects.First,it introduces Shen Zhureng’s interpretation and innovation of the trigram order.Shen Zhureng’s interpretation and innovation of the trigram order problem is presented.Shen Zhureng integrates Jingfang’s eight-group trigrams and Kong Yingda’s theory of the "two-two-phase coincidence" and proposes a new interpretive scheme for the trigram order problem of the Zhouyi;and second,it introduces Shen Zhureng’s inheritance and development of Hu Shian’s images of trigrams study is presented. On the basis of absorbing Hu Shi’an’s "Da Yi Zaitong"(The Great Book of Changes)of the Qing Dynasty on the basis of images of trigrams study,Shen Zhureng further put forward the interpretation and deciphering of the major Yijing images, such as the Hetu,Luoshu, and Taijitu, with his own personal characteristics, thus forming his own bibliographic thinking to a certain extent;and thirdly,it introduces Shen Zhureng’s abandonment and development of the theory of the interrelationships of the 64 hexagrams is introduced.Shen Zhureng collated and summarised some of the Han Dynasty examples of the hieroglyphs and proposed a system for interpreting the interrelationships between the hexagrams and lines of the Zhouyi that consisted of three aspects: "not easy","treatment" and "prevalence";The fourth section presents Shen Zhureng’s additions to the main problems of the hieroglyphic numbers of the past dynasties.Shen Zhureng’s special additions and interpretations of several long-standing issues in the history of Yijing, such as the wandering soul, the returning soul, and the opening of the trigrams, reflect to a certain extent the characteristics of Shen Zhureng’s Yijing thought.Chapter 6 is the concluding remarks, which are the findings and conclusions of this paper. It aims to summarise the general concept, orientation and academic tendencies of Shen Zhureng’s Yi Studies from a holistic perspective,as well as the characteristics of his Yi Studies, and to explain the basic Yi Studies tenets of Shen Zhureng’s Yi Studies, which are "to clarify the image and speak the number, and to clarify the reason and speak the Yi".
