Disenchantment,Enchantment And Re-enchantment:A Cultural Study Concerning The "Mystique" Narration In China In The 1980s | | Posted on:2023-08-26 | Degree:Doctor | Type:Dissertation | | Country:China | Candidate:S J Wang | Full Text:PDF | | GTID:1525307316953179 | Subject:Aesthetics | | Abstract/Summary: | PDF Full Text Request | | “Mystique” narration is a kind of social and cultural narration which based on the structure of disenchantment and(re)enchantment concerning modernity culture.Weberianism and non-Weberianism discourse paradigms have collectively defined its genealogy of academical studies,and the history logic and resources circulation of modernization in the World also makes it a part of the modern Chinese society and culture,especially in 1980 s.However,as the structure of disenchantment and(re)enchantment is a dualism in nature,it not only causes the problem about heavily polemical or apologetic characteristics for the terminologies,but also leads to the study paradigms that derived from such terminologies either belong to the cultural criticism model or the cultural preservation model.Therefore,it is almost relatively impossible to have meaningful study to the fundamental cultural assumptions about reality,knowledge and history.This study attempts to break through the dualism from a Cultural Study approach based on the coalescence of symbol and discourse: “mystique” is regarded as an empty signifier(symbol)with multiple possibilities of meaning,and its specific meaning will be understood according to the discourse production of relevant narratives in different contexts;hence,the study and investigation of the cultural hypothesis of "mystique" narration will have a connection with the specific cultural history of Chinese modernization,that is,a history concerning the language game and the politics of difference with “disenchantment” as the core.From the perspective of language games,disenchantment and its fission products including enchantment and re-enchantment are the cultural constitution of "mystique" narration: disenchantment is related to “modernity” the significance of discourse practice,thus it can be understood a grand narration which have the privileges of languages;as the deviation models of disenchantment narration,both enchantment narration and re-enchantment narration could not only be conceptualized as “mystique”narration,but also constitute a dimension of examining language production and power interaction with disenchantment narration.In terms of the politics of difference,“mystique” narration is closely connected with the anti-superstitious cultural history of modern Chinese society,so the representation of disenchantment,enchantment and re-enchantment in specific cultural texts(novels)represents the meaning of “mystique” narration,namely a interaction of power in the dimensions of time,space and spirituality,including the concept of linear time invaded the categories of society,history,death,nationality and the counterattack of the alternative concept of time;the shaping of material and spiritual space by rational narratives and the re-shaping of irrational narratives;the drift and variation of spirituality in body politics and mass culture.We can draw a conclusion that “mystique” narration could be reinterpreted as a kind of cultural response to the global modernity and its problems,which based not only on structure but also on power.The “mystique” narration is not only an integral part of the narration of global modernity,but also shows the cultural pluralism of modernization in the sense of globalization,including both the circulatory of meaning as a “receiver” and the re-production of meaning as a “provider of feedback”. | | Keywords/Search Tags: | "Mystique" Narration, Disenchantment, Enchantment, Reenchantment, Cultural Study | PDF Full Text Request | Related items |
