Rock crystal is one of people's favorite gemstones in the world. Gemologists had done lots of works on coloration mechanism of color rock crystals, but had not got complete conclusions. By the heat treatment experiments at different temperatures, combining with the results of elemental analysis, studied the coloration mechanism. The results showed that coloration mechanism of color rock crystals(amethyst,citrine,smoky quartz and rose quartz) were color center coloration. In addition, Natural and synthetic crystal can be identified by characteristics of inclusion, distribution of color, twin crystal and so on. However, the accurate identification of rock crystals which the interior is clear is a hard problem in gemstone industry. Several kinds of representative rock crystal samples(amethyst,citrine,smoky quartz and rose quartz) are selected, using several testing technology, including X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy(XRF), Ultra Violet-Visible Spectroscopy (UV-Vis), infrared spectroscopy(FTIR), Raman spectroscopy(RM) and some regular equipments, applying for testing and analyzing rock crystal samples. The results showed that there were some differences on spectrums of natural and synthetic rock crystals, provided some references on the identification of the natural and synthetic rock crystal.
