The total reaction cross section plays a crucial role in many research field, not only in the medical applications and cosmic ray propagation, but also in the optical model and statistical model calculation. One of the fundamental observables is the total reaction cross section, being the difference between the total cross section and the total elastic cross section for neutron as projectile, it is also defined as the difference of the absorption cross section and the compound nucleus elastic scattering cross section. At high incident kinetic energy, it is equal to the absorption cross section. As is known to all, in many incident kinetic energies, there are no experimental data of total reaction cross section, and no experimental data are available for many target nuclei. If we develop a systematic total reaction cross section formula for these target nuclei in some energy region based on the experimental data we have got, we can estimate the reaction cross section that is not existed now. this will be very important in many fields, such as the optimization of optical potential parameters for the target nuclei.Considering the practicability of the total reaction cross section, it has been the subject of extensive investigations. Many scientists have proposed a series of semi-empirical formula, to take different dependence on the projectile, target material or incident kinetic energy into account. Based on these work, we studied their formula, and modified some of them that are not reasonable. Furthermore, we collected the experimental data of the total reaction cross section in some nucleus-nucleus scattering, according to the semi-empirical formula we mentioned, did some research on the influence of the function in the formula on the total reaction cross section, reworked some parameters in the functions, developed a general semi-empirical formula to calculate the total reaction cross section, enlarged the regime of applicability of the formula. In our work, we modified the parameters of the semi-empirical formula in nucleus-nucleus scattering. And provided three sets of parameters, each set corresponding to a different projectile, one for C and O as projectile, one for N, and one for other heavier nucleus as projectiles. We also proposed a semi-empirical total reaction cross section formula for neutron-nucleus reactions based on the proton-nucleus formula. We found an excellent agreement between the calculated cross sections and the experimental data.
