Based on measured tidal data, a two dimensional hydrodynamic mathematical model (HD_FM) is utilized to study the tide and water exchange of Dalian Hutan Bay. Three scenarios are pointed out and different results are carefully discussed to find best method for engineering application.Through the investigation of tide current and the change of tidal influx for specified intersections, the following conclusions can be drawn:(1) The typical tide current at deep sea of Hutan Bay (-30 meter) is reverse flow along coastal line, while inside Hutan Bay, a big cycle current is existed. The flow direction is clockwise for flood tide and anti-clockwise for ebb tide.(2) After construction finished, comparing to natural scenario, the accumulation of 7 days tidal influx for Hutan Bay is deduced about 50%.(3) Scenario 2 (the recommended, submerged breakwater with 3 water gates) has significant improvements for water exchange of the inner field of Hutan Bay. But from the viewpoint of the speed of total water exchange, the effect of construction is not very obvious.
