In the Tang dynasty, the elephants only lived in the southern area of China. No matter they were from the outside or mainland, the elephants were beloved by Tang's people and they had been widely used in the aspect of entertainment, war, medicine, art and so on. This thesis includes the study of the elephants' import, distribution, domestication, and use in the Tang dynasty. The first part researches the geographical distribution of the Tang's elephants, making clear the space of the elephant's survival. The second part discusses the domestication and use of the elephant's in the palace and common society. The last part studies the manifestation of elephants appearing in the religion, decoration and commerce.
