Social progress accelerated the progress of urbanization, and the defects are becoming increasingly apparent. How to draw on the advantages and avoid disadvantages of urbanization, urban planning playing a decisive role to some extent. Thus,the importance of urban planning has been a consensus at all levels from government to ordinary people. that directly make are two social phenomenons.First, urban planning becomes a popular major, second, people's awareness of participation in urban planning has dramatically increased. The popularization of urban planning made the quality of realated education and employees separate from good and bad; The enthusiastic of public participation in urban planning should certainly be encouraged, and should enable more people to become supervisor for urban planning. So, the Standardization of urban planning results is very necessary under current circumstances.Achievements of urban planning mainly contains two parts,one is text planning, which put describing the design thought and problem--analysing process of designer on the first.the other is mapping which shows the intended goal of urban development directly in a visual form. The mapping not only was put emphasis on by professioners but also becomes a medium for Ordinary people in urban planning. So. It is necessary to make a specification for the mapping of urban planning.Althougth, the powerful spatial analysis of GIS have been come to general application, the designers of urban planning didn't yet prone to use GIS software to draw map because of the traditional mapping customs. All of this reduced the working efficiency of designers, unavoidablely lost the accuracy and scientificity in the process of translate the GIS result to other softwareUnder the theory of urban planning and cartography, in order to promote the application of GIS and public participation. The paper has proposed guiding principles and specification of Mapping in urban planning based on the analysis and practice at the various stages of urban planning drawing. The contents as follows:the elements' choice in different maps, the determination of thematic expressions, the design principles of individual symbols, the design of auxiliary elements and so on. The Paper also described the mapping methods for urban planning, procedures, and precautions in detail, then created a common symbol library in the practice of mapping which based on ArcGIS.
