In this paper the latest progress and existing problems in the field of optical current sensor is reviewed and analyzed, the effects of linear birefringence on the performance of Bulk-Material Optical Current Sensors (BMOCS) are investigated, the results are reported. BMOCS is based on the Faraday effect. Linear birefringence is one of the important factors that affect the performance of BMOCS. The measurement of the inner linear birefringence in optical glass sensing head is significant to the design of BMOCS. However, the report about the method of measuring the inner linear birefringence of optical glass sensing head is rarely to seen. The aim of this paper is to fill the blank in this area of research. In this paper, the author proposes some methods of measuring the inner linear birefringence of optical glass sensing head and researches these methods by means of theoretical analysis, computer simulation and experimental investigation. The results show that when the linear birefringence is small, the linear birefringence of the bulk glass can be effectively measured by the methods reported in this paper.
