Geographic Information System (GIS) is a combination of the space science and information science, and is involved many technologies such as geography, graphics, CAD, database technology. GIS has been applied successfully to many fields such as resource management, Automated Mapping/Facilities Management (AM/FM), city and region layout, population and commerce management, transportation, etc. Remarkable social and economic benefits have been made for the applications of GIS. This paper therefore chooses GIS as research task.In order to solve the shortages of traditional desktop GIS such as poor extensibility, lower running speed and high development cost and the difficulty of integration with other information systems, this paper makes research on key technologies of GIS using COM technology. A method for developing component GIS independently with Actvie Template Library (ATL) is given. The data-storing pattern and data-organizing model are involved also in this paper. A prototype system of component GIS is developed finally. This paper is divided into six chapters. The definition and applications of GIS are introduced in the first chapter. The second chapter explains basic concepts, functions and applications of GIS. Brief introduction of component technology are given. Chapter three is involved in the traditional data storing pattern and data organizing model. An improved model of component GIS is proposed. Data consistency maintenance is discussed at the end of this chapter. The fourth chapter is mainly involved in system architecture and inner classes structure of component GIS. With the object-oriented method and United Modeling Language (UML), inner classes structure is designed through using-case, class and sequence view. In the fifth chapter, the component GIS is applied for designing the geographical linking map of power distributed network (PDN). Extension designing of inner classes structure is made based on the specialties of PDN. Some advanced applications such as dynamic establishment of topo structure based on PDN are also discussed. Network analysis including Connectivity and Optimizing Path are available depended on the topo structure. Main functions of testing system developed in Visual Basic also are introduced in this chapter. In the last chapter, general review and some improved suggestions are given for this dissertation.
