The Analysis On The Contemporary Naturalism Of Philosophy Of Science

Naturalism philosophy thoughts can be derived from the ancient Greece age and they ran through the whole developing process of European philosophy. Their developing process went through four major periods. They are the germination period in ancient Greece, the forming period from 17 century to 19 century, the revival period during 1920's and 1930's in America, and the whoopee period during 1970's and 1980's which the contemporary naturalism philosophy of science developed sufficiently. Studying the contemporary naturalism philosophy of science is the major task of this paper.Taking the culture of the post modern philosophy as the background, taking the reverting of psychologism and the explosive growth of computer science and cognitive science as the preconditions, especially after the pendent discussion between science realism and criticism realism, the trend of naturalism philosophy of science presented itself. Quine was the first person who sparkplugged naturalism in philosophy of science definitely among the contemporary philosophers. Quine's naturalize epistemology considered, although the traditional epistemology faced the challenges, it became one part of the natural science especially psychology instead disappearance from a new clear sense. Quine's naturalize epistemology urged some different naturalism genres appearance, and also arouse broad discussion in the academe. Before long, Ronald N.Giere advanced the instrumentalism epistemology. Giere's instrumentalism epistemology was essentially the same as Quine's views, and both of them resorts to the science to solve the epistemology problems. Quine regarded the epistemology as one part of psychology while Giere studied the epistemology with the cognitive science. Both of them caused the epistemology more positivism, thus had cancelled the principal status of the epistemology in some sense. But then, compared with Quine, Giere paid more attention to the implemental rationality and more closed up to American's new pragmatism. If someone considered that Quine's and Giere's thoughts about naturalized philosophy of science were still abstracted theory, Thagard's thoughts tried to demonstrate the epistemology practically. He tried to regard the scientific community as the diffusive artificial intelligence and solve the related problems with the computer net. In 1987, as one of the mostly representatives, Laudan advanced normative naturalism theory.Naturalists claimed that everything was one part of the natural world and they could be explained by natural science. They emphasized the scientific ways to understand and grasp the nature from the nature itself. They pursued to establish the relationship between epistemology and science and study philosophy on the basis of science. It should admit thatthe emphasis on science was significant to help the contemporary philosophy find the outlet of puzzledom. Therefore, the extremeness of some views also made the trend of naturalism philosophy of science to comedown and submerged by others finally. Though the analysis of the views of these representative people, this paper analyzed advantages and disadvantages of naturalism philosophy of science with the materialistic dialectic of Marxist on the basis of the logic development of ancient philosophy genres, and tried to find out some befitting philosophy theories which fit for the situation of China mostly.
