The development of GIS imminently requests the appearance of the software with map generalization function. In the present circumstance that there is no breakthrough in putting map generalization into practice, it is an obvious progress that we make use of new technology and method in computer field, such as component object technology and system integrating method, to settle map generalization problems. However, developing a series of map generalization software from the bottom entirely is in need of abundant manpower, material resources and money. It costs much time and take a risk. Now we can extend map generalization function on the basis of GIS software. Thus, we can save costs, shorten developing period and reduce risk. We conduct research in order to discuss how to extend generalization function of ArcGIS 8.3 based on component object technology by the method of system integration. To extend generalization function of commercial GIS software, we will embed component object (ArcObjects) based on interface programming through common developing platform (Visual Basic), and make use of generalization operator library constructed through another common developing platform (Visual C++).
