By taking Tao Yuan F2 fault gouges for research object, the relationship between fault gouges' fractal feature and fault movement characteristic is studied based on fractal theory. The main tasks include the following aspects:In the first part, the basic principle of fractal geometry is introduced. The background and the present situation of the fractal geometry theory and the measurement methods of the fractal dimension are discussed, which has established the foundation for the following discussion.In the second part, the geological condition of Tao Yuan coal mine, such as stratum characteristics and the tectonic causation of F2 fault are analyzed. By treating experimental data, the characteristics of the grain size, mineral and chemistry ingredients, the mechanical and physical properties of the fault gouges are expatiated. And, the hydrogeological and engineering geological properties of F2 fault were studied fully.In the third part, the calculating methods of the fractal dimension and the experimental techniques of fault gouges are introduced. F2 fault movement characteristics are judged by the fault gouges' fractal dimension that was calculated by fractal theory, and the stability of F2 fault is studied.
