The Terrain Modeling and the Visualization Research of 3D Terrain are important parts of Geographic Information System. With the development and innovation of Computer Science, Computer Graphic and Modern Math Theory, some new research fields, such as the Virtual Reality and the Visualization in Scientific Computing, are attracting more and more researchers. Terrain is the most complex natural scenery of all. It is not only related with terrain modeling, but also with the enormous data. High requirements are needed with respect of large storage, transmission, process, and real-time display.However, it isn't necessary to high resolution in some environments. For the special requirements of information processing and terrain real-time display, it is indispensable to substitute the original model with a simple model. The paper discusses the mesh simplification, which reduces the number of faces, edges and vertexes. Mesh simplification is very important for storage, transmission, process, and real-time rendering.In this paper, the fundamental theories and methods of terrain modeling, including regular square grid and triangulated irregular network, are studied. Based with the comprehensively summarization of the previous works, the simplification of Terrain Modeling of triangulated irregular network is studied. At last, a demo is developed with VC++ and OpenGL which testifies the efficiency of the method.
