The Cretaceous Groundwater Basin(CAB) of the Ordos Basin is one of theimportant bases of energy and chemistry industry. there is a shortage of water resource. Therefore,it has been urgent to find a set of sustainable manner to develop andmanage groundwater resources, and the analysis of groundwater balance is the base toevaluate and develop groundwater resources。Firstly, Groundwater systems of CAB were redefined.into the northern desertplateau groundwater flow system and southern loess plateau groundwater flow system.the northern desert plateau groundwater flow system included 3flowsub-systems:eastern WuLanMuLun-WUDING River watershed sub-system,northernMOLIN River watershed sub-system, western DUSITU-YanChi River watershedsub-system;southern loess plateau groundwater flow system.incude eastern YANRiver and LUO River watershed sub-system and western JING River watershedsub-system. Furthermore.Addly,sub-system is classified into 21 flow small systems.Secondly, sources and sinks of the groundwater are determined based on input andoutput of groundwater systems. Major inputs include precipitation infiltration, irrigation returning water, and lateral recharge. Outputs are evaporate-transpiration(ET), river discharge, artificial extraction. Rate of precipitation infiltration wasdetermined by Empirical method and in-situ tests data. Remote sensing techniquesand empirical method were applied to calculate ET. Baseflow was determined bybaseflow separation technique. Finally, groundwater balance was analyzed over the whole study area.Based onthe analysis of groundwater balance, conceptual model was established and 3-Dnumerical groundwater model of steady state was developed and calibrated. Using themodel, the analysis of groundwater balance is validated. Numerical modeling hasprovided basis for groundwater resources assessment.
