Virtual reality is a technology which is newly imerging in 1990's, generally speaking, it is a computer system which creates and experiences the virtual world. Virtual plants just reappearance the process of growth in three-dimensional space by computer with the application of the technology of virtual reality, which takes the appearance structure of single or colony plants as the object by the way of visualization. The research of virtual plants becomes one of the hotspot in computer science with the fast development of the technology of information, computer graphics and computer emulation.There are two research directions in virtual plants: one is to simulate the appearance of the plants only, which just pay attention to the third dimension of vision; the other is to simulate real process of growth of the plant, which pay attention to real reflection of botany theory. At present, the two directions have both achieved a certain degree of success. But the process of growth of the plant is the results of the interaction of its physiological-ecological, formal-structure and environment. So how to combine the physiological-ecological model with formal-structural model, in order to reappear the real process of growth of plant, becomes one of the important research direction of virtual plants.On the other hand, with the further research into virtual plant, the system will introduce more physiological-ecological models and formal-structural models to consummate the visualization system, which surely aggravates the burden of computer. And in order to reflect the real process of growth of plant in natural environment, the simulation of colony is absolutely necessary, which also augment the data bulk and calculation; even though the visualization of single plant, if we take the combination of physiological-ecological model and formal-structural model into account, the data bulk and calculation will also be in doubling. All of above would make the traditional sequence arithmetic laborsome in the simulation of plant.Based on the problems above, the character of growth period, plant simulation system and parallel arithmetic are analysed and explored deeply in this paper, The results of the study are as follows:1. Study of the simulation system of plant growthThe simulation model of plant growth includes physiological-ecological model and formal-structural model.Growth period model is the basis and premise of other models in physiological-ecological model.
