With the fast development of Internet technology, WWW has become a main approach as well as carrier of gaining all kinds of information for people, which include Geographic Information. In a long period of time, web search becomes not only a popular topic after meal, but also a good tool for searching information in our life. However, with the fast increasing and updating of information in the Web, which leads a coming time of information explosion, the search on Web is facing a great challenge, that is, the traditional searching method based on keywords is not so efficient and accurate for searching relevant information because the computer can't understand what information semantics efficiently. As a result, the web searching tool can't provide a satisfying service for people's searching on Internet more and more. So,it is a new task for researchers to find a new way and develope a new tool for web searching.At the other hand,the widly using of WebGIS has promoted the application of geographic information on Web at a more broad scope.There is also a requirement for intelligent spatial-aware retrieval.Currently,the Semantic Web based on Ontology plays the key role in solving the problem of information retrieval.Considering the characteristic of AIDS spatial information, this paper has discussed the theory,method and application of ontology driven spatial information retrieval on internet.The main research work carried out in this thesis have been described as follows.Firstly, after analyzing the limited situation of information retrieval on the present web environment, this paper suggests that the semantic web is the key support platform to deal with spatial information intelligently and semantically on the Internet. Ontology is the key technology to realize the information integration in the semantic web. At first, the research aims and main contents have been described in the thesis. Next, the author introduces the basic concepts and hiberarchy of semantic web, as well as ontology's definations and it's related technologies, which include formal description language, building tools and the platforms for knowledge processing, etc.At the same time, the concept of Geo-ontology and the relations to geographic recognization and intelligent processing for geographic information are also explained. At the end of this chapter, the conclusion is that the information ontology model and service ontology model are the key research fields in this thesis.Then, this paper has discussed the ODRIS4AIDS's general system frame, information ontology model and service ontology model in three Chapters respectively (Chapter III, Chapter IV and ChapterV) in details.And the main research contents in the three Chapters are as follows: 1. Give the general structure and two running mechanism of ODRIS4AIDS basedon semantic web services. And discuss the concept and their relations in generaland specific meaning.
