As an Intersectional Science, GIS (Geographic Information System) is erected on the base of Computer Science, Topography, Remote Sensing, Geography, Environmental Science, Spatial Science, Information and Managing Science. Now, GIS is drawing more and more people's attention and used widely in engineering construction.In this article, the author introduces the history of the progresses in GIS in brief. Then expound the concept, and characteristic of GIS. The component object oriented model is the trend and direction of secondary develop of GIS. The author illustrates how . to use the object oriented technique of MapObjects and takes method of developing for example. Furthermore, the application of the property, method and event of common component are also described. Supported by visual basic and the functions of arranging, analysis, display of spatial data in component, Hazard Assessment System of Earthquake and Drawing and Information Statistics System of Route Graph are established.In the process of developing The Hazard Assessment System of Urban Earthquake, Taking the advantage of Geographic Information System for gathering, storing, analysing and displaying the geographic data, the author made use of the MapObjects to do the secondary develop based on GIS on the Visual Basic platform. For different urban constructions, their damage were analyzed and calculated under the different earthquake intensity by dint of the model of earthquake attenuation. This system can carry on the earthquake emulation in advance, and demonstrate the analysis and evaluation result. Thus it contribute to the analysis, management and decision.In the process of developing the Drawing and Information Statistics System of Route Graph, the author made use of the characteristic that every graphic object has both spatial data and property data to link the spatial data of graphic object to database by property data. Thereby, this system can reduce a large amount of manpower, and avoid error in the course of statistic.
