Internet with its openness and friendly interface is quickly becoming the carrier for processing and promulgating network information. Along with the gradually popularize of Internet application and Geographic Information System (GIS) technique, Web has been a ideal medium to promulgate maps for that thousands of people access maps that is static, dynamic or user defined via www. Internet sends information to broad clients, which made the general public (as well as the GIS professionals) benefit from GIS. Internet GIS has turned into one of the two hottest and most important developing trends.Web Map Service stores, promulgates, organizes and manages mass spatial data in integrated or distributed servers. Clients carry out online retrieving, querying, analyzing and downloading spatial data through Client-side, and the spatial data is represented as the form of maps, without the restriction of time and space, which break out the limitation of the range of traditional GIS application and superior expertise. Meanwhile, clients dispersed over different region and divisions can do the collaborative work through Web Map Service, which is enhancing the level of system resources utilization, enlarging the range of information use, completing the needed functions quickly and effectively and saving investment. At present, there are tow developing direction for Web Map Service: the first one is from the perspective of WebGIS, emphasizing on implementing spatial analyst functions and solving the problems such as interoperability between isomery systems in platform of open and distributed geographic information service and data integrating and sharing; the other one is from the perspective of .NET, mainly offering map searching service and laying emphasis on providing fast network query service and convenient location service, the representatives of which are Google Earth and Google Maps. This article is taking WebGIS as the promulgating platform to analyze Web Map Service, which analyzes the existing implement approach and techniques of Web Map Service, introduces the organization and management of map data in the framework of web map service specification set by Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), brings up the architecture of Web Map Service based on MapXTreme, and illustrates the key technology to implement this system architecture.
