With the increasing of the difficulty of prospecting, the exploration method based on the combination of multi-information and various methods has been the main mean at present. How to utilize the available mineral exploration information reasonably and quickly to serve for finding new deposits has been a great problem for geological workers. Many domestic departments and companies developed their own Geography Information System(GIS) in recent years. These systems accelerated informatization of resource and environment. However, there is no an IMS(information management system) which is suitable for metallic deposit. Therefore, it will have profound significance to develop such a system. The prospecting information management system for metallic deposit was developed based on the research of prospecting's actuality and process, the analysis and classification of exploration information, This system has function such as data collecting, data editing ,graphics overlay, graphics output, attribute data query , attribute data output and so on. The system not only provides accurate and reliable information of the metallogenic prognosis, but also meets the demands of Government's Decision-making and the public inquiry.Analysis and classification of information is the basis of design of system. The meanings and contents of prospecting are different at different time and region. In a word, according to definite theories, means and methods, prospecting is a systemic investigation, review and research to find deposit. According to the prospecting process, prospecting can fall into four phases including prediction, general survey, detailed survey and exploration. Due to different work procedure and content of prospecting, the prospecting data obtained is different. According to the method and means, prospecting information can be divided into geologic information, remote sensing information, physical geography information, geochemical information exploration information and so on. The exiting format of data can be divided into graph, image, figure, form, video information and so on.With the development of prospecting methods and means, the category and quantity of information is more and more, the prospecting data is more and more complicated. So the prospecting information has the characteristics of multi-resources, spatiality, multistage, uncertainty and relativity.Data classification is the core content in database design. From the point view of DBMS management, prospecting information can be divided into attribute information, spatial information and basic data information. Attribute information includes geologic characteristic, geologic condition, metallogenetic regularity, prospecting criteria and so on. Spatial information includes geologic information of mining area, engineering information, geophysical prospecting information, geochemical prospecting information, remote sensing information and so on. Basic data information includes geochemical prospecting data, geophysical prospecting data, petrochemical data, trace element data, isotope data, Ore Analysis data, remote sensing data and so on.According to the classification of prospecting information,a prospecting information DB(database) was built. This DB comprises forty-five tables including one mineral area name table, one basic data table, five text data tables , one spatial data table, and so on. These tables include all the information about prospecting theories and methods. Text tables includes attribute information of mineral area,spatial data include graph information of mineral area. System function are composed of two parts,the first is data collecting and data in storage which includes setting mineral area,browsing letter and so on,the second is information querying and output which includes attribute querying and graph querying。In addition,a function of color and symbol transferring was designed to satisfy the demand of system。The adoptive scheme of the prospecting information management system is confirmed based on the existing information, the demand to government public, professionals and existing data. The adoptive scheme of the prospecting information management system includes the management and collection of spatial data, text data, primary data and the choice of exploitation language and database。MapObject (MO), one of today's more popular ComGIS, is used to manage, query and analyze the spatial data. The format of spatial data is saved as shape file, and its attribute data could be processed with software Excel. In addition, supported by MO, shape file, image file and attribute table can be connected with special database by ESRI' s special database engine. Because of the use of image file, vector data can be gathered from grid data. Text data includes basal data and attribute data which can be browsed and edited with VS. according to file formats' multiformity, the basic data is put into database as binary mode. data not only is managed by database , but also its primitive character is kept. The Visual Basic 6.0 is selected as developing platform. by this system. Access is selected to memory kinds of data based on the view of the characteristic of the prospecting information and Database.The application of this system in Sandaowanzi golden deposit indicates that the prospecting information can be managed effectively by comGIS developing technology.
