Land use / land cover change (LUCC) which caused by human activities is the main drivers to cause ecological environment and climat change, and it made great influence at sustainable development of human society. The study of land use / land cover change has become one of the hot topics of geography and relevant subjects, and regional study of LUCC is becoming the new trends of current LUCC study.Regional and local scale study of LUCC is the focal point of the global research, which offers not only abundant regional information for the synthesize research of LUCC, but also the concrete channel into the research of global environmental change. The study area Hotan oasis and Weigan-Kuqa River Oasis is located the southern margin and northern margin of Tarim Basin separately. They are the sensitive region of environmental change, influenced by cotinental dry climate and landform pattern for a long time, growthed the model oasis-desert ecosystem and occupies etremely important status in western arid land environmental change study. So, in arid and semi-arid ecological environment the Hotan oasis and Weigan-Kuqa River Oasis were selected as cases for the study of remote sensing monitoring and regional contrast of LUCC in the southern margin and northern margin of Tarim Basin.We chose the middle resolution sensor MODIS, Benefiting from the IDL Language Programming System, NDVI of single image is realized through band match tools of ENVI and month max value composite NDVI is computed and extracted by the method of MVC. Based this we established plant cover remote quota model,devided plant cover grades , made a Longitudinal comparison and crosswise comparison to Hotan oasis and Weigan-Kuqa River Oasis from change extent, annual change rate, change rate and so on of plant cover.The result shows below:The area change situation of Hotan oasis is that the most plant cover area of VI grade,II grade and I grade has changed to IV grade and III grade. That is to say the most area of high plant cover and low plant cover has changed to middle plant cover.The area change situation of Weigan-Kuqa River Oasis is that the most plant cover area of VI grade has changed to V grade , V grade has changed to IV grade, IV grade has changed to III grade, III grade has changed to II grade and I grade,II grade has changed to I grade.That is to say the change of Weigan-Kuqa River Oasis plant cover is from low grade to high grade. The change rate situation of Hotan oasis plant cover is that from 2002 to 2006, the plant cover area change rate is higher in the later years than the former years, and it is goon adding. That is to say the Hotan oasis people has done good at hurricane lamp, but they protect the old oasis improperly, and the situation is go on worse.The change rate situation of Weigan-Kuqa River Oasis plant cover is that from 2002 to 2006, the plant cover area change rate is lower in the later years than the former years. That is to say the Weigan-Kuqa River Oasis people has done good at hurricane lamp and protect the old oasis, but the later years has nothing on the former years.The contrast analysis between Hotan oasis and Weigan-Kuqa River Oasis shows that the people of the two oasis should study the measure of hurricane lamp, persisting in farm basic construct, develop many kinds of forestation, especially build farm shelter belt, so that the oasis entironment can get better. While the task of Hotan oasis is more difficult than Weigan-Kuqa River Oasis.
