In many kinds of information management system, GIS (Geographical Information System)is one of the most quickly developing systems. It is an architectonic aggregate of computer software and hardware. It can efficiently create, operate, analyses and display manifold data of geography or space reference, combine graphics and data, express the information of geography graphics. GIS has been widely used in many fields, such as resource research, evaluation, management and inspection; city management, programming, and city engineering administration management, special decision, disaster evaluation and forecast, geographical management and utilization, and traffic, agriculture, public security, etc.Relatively, the development of spatial analytical function of GIS is unsatisfactory. Meanwhile, the spatial target location, attribution expression and complex spatial relation expression between two targets put the foundation of spatial analyses. In order to improve the capability of spatial analyses, we must find a solution that can accomplish the description and expression of spatial relationship. In recent years, the development of spatial reasoning is great, at the same time it promotes the development of GIS that has become the most widely and mature application domain of spatial reasoning. Hence, the study of the spatial relationship and reasoning have important academic and practical meaning in advancing the development of GIS.This paper analyses the advantages and disadvantages among the spatial topological relationship models by studying the key problem of GIS----spatial topological relationship. Based on the result of analysis, we choose Hierarchy-based Method as the common model, and study the methods of the transformations of other methods to HBM. At the end, we research on the applications of HBM(Hierarchy-based Method).Firstly, this paper introduces the basic conception, investigation background and contend and actuality of qualitative spatial representation of topological relations, and confirm the related study fields.Secondly, representation methods for spatial topological relations are researched, including n-intersection model (4IM, 9IM, DE4IM, DE9IM), RCC model, classification invariant model, CBM model. And this paper also studies the means to the transformation from other methods to HBM based on the advantages and disadvantages among the spatial topological relationship models.Further, hierarchy representation method and hierarchy reasoning method of spatial topological relations are presented, and the method of topological weight is raised, which is used in to the Genetic Algorithm. Finally, an archetypal system for the transform of topological relationship models is built, topological weight is computed, and the correctness of the system is validated.
