Cross section balancing is an important technique in the study of tectonic evolution of basins. It has become an important method in petroleum exploration and exploitation. Balanced cross sections are constructed to restore the growth history of an ancient structure in which the sedimentary beds are placed back to depositional, pre-deformational levels. This technique has been applied in the Zhuanghai oil field area and Laizhouwan area.Four seismic profiles have been selected and structural sections have been compiled for balancing. The results allow to constrain tectonic evolution of the Jiyang depression and Laizhouwan basin during the Cenozoic. Furthermore, some problems in constructing balanced cross sections are posed and have been discussed.
