Lightning is a natural phenomenon that may causes heavy casualties and serious economic losses. The applications of lightning location system data to the lightning warning, severe convection weather forecasting will provide a important measure for the lightning protection. It is very significant for the mitigation of lightning disasters. In this paper, lightning temporal characteristics is discussed in Guangzhou city from June to September, based on the lightning temporal characteristics to find the relationship between lightning and atmospheric parameters.A method of lightning potential forecasting is pointed out. The study on the Doppler radar data and lightning data in a squall line is provide basic experience of the application of radar data for the lightning nowcasting.Firstly, in chapter one, the purpose of this research on the development and application of lightning and Doppler weather radar at home or abroad are given.In chapter two, the lightning location data in Guangzhou from June to September in 2007 is used to analyse the flashes and return strokes temporal characteristics, it's show that the most frequent period of a day is between 13:00 and 19:00, which is closely associated with severe convection weather taking place after the midday. Most flashes and return strokes are negative. The mean intensities of positive lightning and positive return strokes are bigger than those of the negatives.Then in chapter three, based on the lightning temporal characteristics, lightning location system data and sounding data from June to August in 2007 were employed to study the correlation between lightning and atmospheric parameters. Lightning activity and atmospheric parameters have some correlation. When parameters over the default value is more, the probability of lightning appeared will be greater. On the contrary, it will be smaller. By the data from September 1st to 15th, whether lightning activity is appeared or not is tested. Based on the seven elected parameters, the linear regression relation between lightning frequency, lightning current and these parameters are analyzed. In chapter fore, the Doppler radar characteristics, lightning characteristics and their relationships are anatomized in a squall line. It provide basic experience of the application of radar data for the lightning warning.Finally, the remain problems in my opinion are pointed out and a tentative way for the future research is outlined.
