Traditional botanical knowledge of the Mongolians in Horqin Left Wing Rear Banner of Inner Mongolia includes folk nomenclature and use of local wild plants. There are 252 folk names used by native Mongolians, meanwhile, 132 species of wild plants used by local Mongolians.Folk names of wild plants used by local Mongolians have special structure, category, basis of nomenclature, and have distinguishing features of regional and cultural characteristics. There are 252 folk names corresponding to 189 species of wild plants. Folk names of plants are still used by local people, showing significance of practical use value and existing value.Traditional knowledge on use of wild plants concerning 7 aspects that food use, medicinal use, forage use, construction, technical and craft use, faggot use, commodity use and cultural use. There are 48 species of wild plants used by the Mongolians for food in Horqin Left Wing Rear Banner, including 4 species for grains, 34 as vegetables, 10 as fruits, 5 as tea, 2 for edible oil, 4 as seasoning, 4 as glue and 3 for chewing materials. There are 44 species of wild plants are used for medicine, and another 4 species also for veterinary medicine. The medicinal parts and methods express the characteristics of easy to collection and need of emergency. In addition, there are 92 species of wild plants used as forage, 28 species as construction, technical and craft materials, 21 as faggot, 14 as commodity. All of these wild plants play an important role in the production and daily life of native residents. Some phenomenon, regarding cultural effects of plants, plays a positive part to conserve local native vegetation, which involves worship to nature, traditional custom, and taboo related to wild plants. The traditional knowledge on nomenclature and use of wild plants of the Mongolians in Horqin Left Wing Rear Banner, is an important part of the Mongolian culture. The traditional knowledge on nomenclature and use of wild plants of local Mongolians should be respected and protected and future research and application will be needed.
