Ancient ruins are the short of the ancient cultural sites.As the name suggests that they are the historical and cultural legacy of the past. Ancient ruins with historical and scientific value were created in the process of the development of human civilization and were saved in the long course. In this paper,the earthen archaeological sites are the construction of the soil which remains down ater the destruction of ancient buildings.The earthen archaeological sites are the important branches of our heritage fields. On the ancient Silk Road there distributes a large number of typical constructions of the earthen archaeological sites. The earthen archaeological sites,which have been built long years ago, however, have been subjecting to the weathering and erosion due to wind, rain, sand and sunlight and sometimes suffered from the damage caused by earthquakes and human activities.As a result, the earthen archaeological sites are rather vulnerable under earthquakes Since the seismicity in China are generally rising and many of these earthen archaeological sites located in high seismicity zone, it is very important to carry out studying on the Stability analysis of earthquake of the earthen archaeological sites to provide measures to improve seismic resistance of these earthen archaeological sites.In this paper,taking the earthen archaeological sites of Dunhuang region as an example ,such as fengsui,corner piers and walls. The building techniques of the earthen archaeological sites and the environmental geological engineering conditions are explained and the main disease Characteristics and their causing mechanism are given. Based on the assessment of seismic risk of the earthen archaeological sites and on the spot testing ground motion Characteristic,three typical earthen archaeological sites are selected to perform 3-D FEM calculating using ground acceleration history of different engineering properties as input. Through study of the displacement and stress fields of the earthen archaeological sites under ground motion of the different PGA, different frequency spectrum and duration,the failure mechanism of the different style earthen archaeological sites is discussed.Finally, based on Mohr-Coulomb intensity criterion, the paper displays the dynamic damage characteristics of the different style earthen archaeological sites and and evaluates the stability of the whole earthen archaeological sites.The thesis is supported by Gansu Provincial Science and Technology Support Programme (0708NKCF089).
