Study of ground motion synthesis is an important issue in earthquake engineering research. Furthermore, it is also the urgent demands for social stability, development and earthquake disaster reducing. In the last half century, the strong ground motion data accumulated rapidly in some countries around the world, and a considerable wealth of seismic data has been recorded. As a rule, in a strong earthquake, it can not only access a wide range of seismic data, but also ensure the space density of the data. However, because of earthquake's randomness and uncertainty, these records are often concentrated in certain areas. The difference of geographical environment and geological conditions caused many data of no actual value. In order to obtain the seismic data of specific conditions of geographical and geological, synthetic seismic research has been recommended by earthquake researchers and earthquake workers more and more. Many methods for seismic motion synthesis have been proposed one after another, such as the random method, the trigonometric series method, the empirical Grimm function method of synthesis seismic motion and so on. The statement and application of these methods has greatly promoted the research and development of synthesis seismic motion. However, the variety of methods can not solve some fundamental problems, On one hand, some formulas are too complicated and difficult to make the calculation; On the other hand, some calculations are too simplified, making the actual results far away from the record. This article sums up and compares the current ground motion methods available on the basis of a large number of documents, and makes some improvements. This article is mainly includes several aspects as following:(1) This article introduces the study of the history and development of the synthesis of ground motion, and sums up the current international and domestic ground motion synthesis method: seismic analysis of the characteristics of the spectrum.(2) Details of the commonly used or not commonly used methods are introduced. The commonly used methods are the Grimm function method, stochastic limited fault method, based on the synthesis of non-stationary time-frequency ground motion. And some of the not commonly used methods, such as numerical Grimm function method, broad-band Grimm function method, the trigonometric series method and so on.(3) Adopt the empirical Grimm function method to follow the earthquake studying Kashi, Xinjiang, adopt the limited fault of random to follow the earthquake of magnitude 6.5 studying Shenyang, as well as with the random conditions of use of non-stationary time-frequency-based method to study and compare the relevance of ground motion. At the same time, carry out thorough comparison go into on this three kinds of method, sum up the advantages and disadvantages of various methods and propose improvement suggestions.(4) According to our country earthquake actual geological conditions, by researching into a large number of seismic data calculated on the basis of the experience derived formulas, the actual seismic studies are tested.(5) Study further into Wenchuan earthquake. Starting from Wenchuan geographic location, geology condition and environment, the strong acceleration of time are synthesized, Besides making acceleration contour map, carrying on the contrast with the actual earthquake record, earthquake faults in the vicinity of a certain scope of the disaster are studied, which can be used for integrating theory with practice.(6) The synthesis seismic motion's methods used in the paper are discussed, and a forecast to the future synthesis seismic motion method's research is put forward.
