Granular matter refers to particle systems in which the size d is larger than one micron, the grains can exhibit special behavior. There are still many phenomena in granular matter not to be explained completely, especially the motion law and mechanism of particles under vibration.Segregation of a mixture of spheres under vibration was found early, and people use the method to segregation. However, deep research of this phenomenon is only in recent years. The current study on the size segregation mainly concentrated in the vertical direction and the horizontal direction. In our work, experimental and computational results are presented on the segregation of a mixture of spheres with two different sizes, in a horizontal revolving system. The main works are concluded as follows:1. Transport effects in a monolayer consisting of a binary granular mixture, confined in a horizontally vibrating circular dish are studied experimentally. Packing density of particles plays an important role in the reptation phenomenon and the segregation. The results obtained by experiment and numerical simulation agree quantitatively.2. Vibration frequency also plays an important role in the reptation phenomenon and the segregation of spheres. The results show that reptation phenomenon is a precondition for segregation.3. A novel effect in a granular material under swirling motion of the container is obtained by numerical simulation. Packing density has a major impact on the rotation and reptation phenomenon. The results are in good agreement with experiment. The results show that the rotation phenomenon depends on certain conditions.Through research and analysis in this article, a further understanding to the movement characteristic of granular matter can be attained. This experiment can serve as a simple model to reveal the brazil-nut effect in the size segregation of granular matter, and has certain guiding significance to the segregation of a mixture of spheres in food and chemical industry.
